Cooling fan hits the harmonic balancer. Took the fan blades off and the belt still runs off the pulley. Something seams to be miss aligned but I cant see what it is.

Your harmonic balancer is coming apart. The Balancer has rubber ring that eventually wears. I also know that when people try and use WD40 on the tensioner pulley because the bearing is squeeking the WD40 sometimes works its way to the balancer or accidently sprays on the balancer. The WD40 eats away at the rubber. You will need a removal tool to do this. Where you pick the balancer up they should have this.

Can a harmonic balancer cause a belt to misalign and cause premature belt wear?

If it's clear that the alignment of the belts isn't correct, then your balancer probably is not the problem. You can usually see the harmonic balancer "wobble" as the engine is running if it's damaged, a visual inspection should give you an idea if it's the problem. It would have to be in terrible condition to cause your belt to change position.

Usually this problem occurs after an alternator, water pump, idler pulley, or similar part has been replaced with one that doesn't line up the same as the OEM part that was replaced. This is one of the most important reasons for comparing your core or old part with the new parts precisely, before installing the replacement parts.

Try aligning the belt on all of the pulleys except one (at a time and then switch to leave out another item), this should help you to determine what is out of alignment specifically and then you should be able to measure the difference hopefully identifying a fix.

Replacing the Crankshaft and Camshaft sensors on a 1991 and later Buick Park...

If your car is misfiring in a rhythmical pattern when you first start it up for the day or dieing when engine is hot, it could mean your Camshaft or Crankshaft sensors need replacement.

Important, disconnect negative cable from the battery before doing any work on electrical system. Wear safety goggles.

Tools recommended:
Break Bar, Torque Wrench, ratchet driver and a full metrics ratchet socket set, one Q tip, large straight blade screwdriver, ratchet extension and adapters if needed.

First we'll start with the easiest and cheapest of the two sensors.

Replacing the camshaft sensor:

The camshaft sensor is located on the right side of the engine, behind the water pump pulley.

1. Loosen the screws to the water pump pulley with a breaker bar before removing the serpentine belt. Always turn counter clockwise to loosen.

2.Remove the serpentine belt via the belt tension-er.

3.Use a regular ratchet driver to finish removing the belt pulley from the water pump.

4.Remove the bolt holding the camshaft sensor in place and disconnect electrical connector. Secure the connector with a clothes pin so you don't lose it down in the engine compartment. Clean around the sensor to avoid getting dirt in the engine.

5. Pull the camshaft sensor straight out with a slight twisting motion.

6. Lightly lubricate the O-Ring on the new sensor with fresh motor oil, and install in the engine.

7. installation is the reverse of removal.

Crankshaft
Sensor:

1. Jack up the front passenger side of the car and safely support it on jack-stands.

2.Remove the tire, remove the inner tire well splash guard cover.

3.Before removing serpentine belt, loosen the center bolt on the harmonic balancer/vibration dampener. (crankshaft pulley)

4. Remove serpentine belt via the belt tensioner.

5.Finish loosening and remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer.
Have an assistant help you, using care not to let the weight of the harmonic balancer rest on the bolt as it can be damaged. Gently pry it of with a straight blade screwdriver. Leave the woodruff key in the crankshaft. Use care to not damage the crankshaft during removal as oil leakage could result. Mark the relationship between the crankshaft and the pulley, so you will be able to line the pulley up just right during re -installation.

6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft sensor, secure the connector with clothes pin and loosen the bolts holding the sensor pedestal in place.

7.Separate the old sensor from the pedestal, and install the new sensor, just the same way the old sensor came out. Using the suggested crankshaft sensor alignment tool on the back of the harmonic balancer, making sure the fins on the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor's slot and don't hit it. If any fins on the back side of the harmonic balancer are bent, damaged, or missing, replace the harmonic balancer assembly.

Installation is the reverse of removal. It is imperative the crankshaft sensor be aligned properly before engine start up to avoid damage. Use care not to over tighten bolts during installation. Always tighten to manufacturer's recommended torque.

1995 Tahoe belt slips off harmonic balancer? Just a little but it's out of the ribs. What should I do?

1995 with factory air or not (AC)
what engine is there. not he Diesel right>?
1994-95 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L engines, ??????
they are NOT ALL THE SAME .
the car is old, super old, most are not on the road now, (look around) unless huge costly upgrades done and I have many.
no engine size told nor country as in cars not the same all over earth and are called EXPORTS in USA makers site;.

the cause are beside you replacing ALL THAT already, omg,.
OMG new belt not listed, why:? forgot that first?
I will assume a new Gates belt put here, as old belts sure can fail and drift off any pulley,(Ribs or not)
the answer is alignment is wrong or tension is wrong
seen this vast times, me.
seen and fixed, some are parts missing that cause it to be mis-aligned or using the WRONG PARTS (all in your list and more)
if the harmonic balance looks good (i can;'t see it) and is not bend or wobbles when run, or belt rib groves no missing or rusted away
or the bolt holding it missing bad , broken or set to spec torque?
then it is good. (mostly( and if shims or washers or the like behind it not missing. see all parts at the dealers parts pages for missing parts.
there is 1 idler here left side facing engine and its bearing must not be bad.
the tension-er is a prime device here, not junk import no name parts from china need apply.
as is perfect alignment off all things under that SERP.

the belts can be damaged easy
even run one backwards (reversed) and if you did that
it not has set to it, and will never run straight again.
so learn this hint. doing service
put and arrow on the belt up top left to right
I use Liquid paper, and now the arrow tells me later
how to not run it backwards ever.
hint #1 some belts have an arrow already and those must never be run backwards. (arrow i crank rotation and is CW ,clock wise facing damper pulley)
lots to learn about serps if they fail serp1a-g0ycw0yi1uibjsvvpavin1jd-d-3.jpg

Does removing the ac belt cause engine imbalance in a 1988 ford festiva?

not if it is a separate drive belt. I would be looking for another reason for imbalance such as failed harmonic balancer pulley, failed fan bearings if belt driven, miss in engine many cars run ok with out an a/c belt

What all has to be replaced when the crankshaft pulley? falls off

Did the crankshaft pulley separate from the harmonic balancer? No bolts missing? This happens once in a while. Just replace the harmonic balancer assembly (and probably the belt).

The Serpentine belt keeps walking off the Crank shaft pulley by one rib as if the pulley moved away from the engine.. Is this where the harmonic balancer is. If so, is it difficult to change?

Before you change anything,,check and see if everything is in line..Also feel all the pulleys and make sure everything turns ok...If the powersteering pump has been replaced,,sometimes the pulley was not pressed on far enough..If it seem to be the harmonic balancer make sure its not damage and the bolt in the middle is tight...If you remove it..You remove middle bolt,,then you have to use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer itself..unusuall for the harmonic balancer to be bad unless it was hit by something
