This is just a shot in the dark... But i THINK the # 1 cylinder needs to be @ top dead center.... And the rotor needs to be pointing at the part of the cap where the spark plug wire connection for cylinder #1 is.

change one spark wire at a time on the distributor.buy new set of spark plugs wires remove them from box.match old wires with new wires to use the correct length to each cylinder.now if you need to change distributor cap.mark location distributor cap.number tag plug wires on the distributor cap so you can remove plug wires on distributor cap so you can replace cap and rotor and put wires back on the distributor cap in correct place.remember change one plug wire at a time so you wont get confuse.

I need to know where the plug wires go.from spark plug to distibuter cap on a 1986 4.1 coupe deville(cad.)

FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Just changed out my spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Now the car wont start, what is the problem ?

Recheck the firing order of the spark plugs and wires. you might have connected them wrong. Can't tell you the firing order since I don't know what kind, make, or year of your vehicle.

1987 MSD Distributor Cap Sparkplug Placement Help

First you need to determin witch one is #1 on cap Witch usely is the one directly behind carb. or throutle body. than its perty strate forward from there rotor runs clockwise. Cap only goes on one way. Food for thought when you chg. cap or wires one at a time is the rule even for a seasoned mechanic.

1987 GMC Jimmy Distributor cap and Rotor replacement

A diagram may not be needed as its a reasonably easy fix to do on your own.the distributor ca p will only fit on properly one way because at the base of the cap locaters can only fit the distributor if they line up.When doing the spark plug leads do them one at a time and if nessecary write or mark leads as 1,2 etc .The rotor can only fit on one way but put a mark on the distributor to show where the rotor was pointing when you took it off and if it still points there when the new one is fitted. When changing distributor cap and leads they have to go to the correct place.Pays to mark the outside of distributor cap where the locating bits are On the new and old one.Fit the new cap and rotor then take a spark plug lead and fit to new cap 1 at a time. You can tell by lining up the marks on the outside of the distributor cap when you hold them one on top of the other.Good luck

Engine missfire

Check your spark plugs and wires. Ensure they are all correct coming off of the distributor cap. You may wanna even change them (plugs, wires, and cap) just to make sure they are all in good working condition and you put them all on in the correct placement/order.
