Re: vista problem

Vista runs extremly slow so you should get the computer up to date and you and like alewis said you need a disk to get windows XP back you can call tech support to get the recovory disk and if you still have a warrenty you can get that disk for free or you can go to wal mart target or a computer store and get windows xp OS (operating system) back wich will cost you about $100

Re: vista problem

Any XP installation disk will format your hard drive. All you have to do is boot the XP installation disk and follow the prompts. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE YOU CAN'T GO BACK! unfortunately you can't recover on OS that you've overwritten... And if you could you wouldn't want to. You need an install disk, which Compaq should provide for you.

Acer extensa 4630z I am trying to reboot Vista but I cannot get to the proper screen. I can get no further than Edit Windows boot options for: Microsoft Windows Vista

You may have to get a CD/DVD of Vista from your friend or associate for reinstallation of the operating system. If you go to Windows 7 or 8.1 you would be better off than waste time with Vista and all of its problems. If the CD Drive is not working, get an External USB CD/VDV drive from WalMart. They are not expensive and they come in handy at times. Plug the external CD/DVD into a USB port and start up the computer seeking the new device. Run the Software the same as you would from your unstable device.

Gateway laptop powers up for 5seconds and shuts down. No screen comes up.

check all power leads from motherboard to hard drive and all of your cd/dvd drives make sure the connections are good and not faulty and there is no dust built up on them
another possible reason could be a memory dump you might be running to many programs at the one time placing to much strain on the CPU also you might not have enough RAM random access memory to check what is running when your computer is running scroll to the bottom toolbar right click select task manager applications and processes if you see something you dont need running select end now to check how much ram you have click start right click on my computer select properties you will see all of your computers details another way to check how much RAM you have click start all programs accessories system tools system imformation all of your computers imformation will be there try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this will schedule on a restart don't do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any imput may damage your computer then defragment your hard drive another way of running chkdsk click start control panel administrive tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start place a tick two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start should schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
then defragment your hard drive

also you might download and use this registry cleaner it is totally free to use hope this helps

Cooling fan does not come on no power to the computer

So basically you cannot get the pc to POST. Meaning you have just a black screen when you power on the pc, right?

First off, did you attempt to update BIOS before this happened. 90% of the time this is caused by a corrupt bios.

If you are the victim of a bad BIOS flash, don't freak there are some options. First off, if the computer (or motherboard) is still under warranty the Computer (or motherboard) can be sent to the Vendor for a BIOS reprogramming.
If you are a DIY PC builder and the warranty is expired you can take out the bios chip and sent it someone who reprograms BIOS chips or you can buy a brand new chip form them. I will show you my people.***angelb***

For non-BIOS issues:

If you did not try to update BIOS before the problem started then try these troubleshooting steps.

1. Full power down. Unplug the power cord from the Power supply. Then hold down the pc power button (this discharges any residual power in the capacitors).

2. Open the case and reseat the graphics card, hard drive, and RAM.

3. Take out one of the RAM sticks if there is 2 or more. Swap the RAM sticks in different RAM slots. Try one stick at a time to see if you can get the PC to boot. If this works, then the remaining ram sticks are damaged.

4. Set the Cmos jumper to clear. Power up the pc. Power down the PC. Set the Cmos jumper back to normal position, power up the PC.

5. Unplug and replug all the power supply cables.

6. Check the powersupply function. Either by a powersupply voltage checker (20-25 dollars at local PC shop), get the supply tested at a PC shop (usually a free service), put the powersupply in a different pc, or try a different powersupply in the problem computer.

If the Powersupply checks out ok, then you will have to do a process of elimination to find out what part or parts are the culprit of the No-Boot.

Start by pulling all the ram sticks if you have not already. This is the easiest components to check and usually a culprit.

Take out one of the RAM sticks if there is 2 or more. Swap the RAM sticks in different RAM slots. Try one stick at a time to see if you can get the PC to boot. If this works, then the remaining ram sticks are damaged.

If it is not the RAM, you have to continue removing items such as sound cards, un-plugging hard drives and optical drives, other PCI cards. Do this one at a time until you find the culprit. If a POST screen, meaning you can see Anything from the PC brand name to Motherboard brand name appearing on the screen.

High speed fan

the thermo switch determine how high and how long the fan need to run to obtain the proper temperature, it will be a consern if the fan doesn't run.
as far as the upgrade of your machine. do you have enough RAM (2GB minimum) and how is the CPU?(1.6GHz or better) can the CPU handle the operating system. Since you didn't mention that, and by reading what you say, I believe the machine is not able to handle the Vista, that is why the fan is running at high speed and non-stop. The CPU is getting hot, and the power supply is pulling lots power.
Vista loading takes approximately 1-2 minutes, dependent on how many applications you have installed and what you have on the desktop.
roll back to XP from Vista is no possible, the only way is to reformat and reinstall XP.

Fan won't run

This is strange. It is very likely that since the ram went bad and you replaced it , and now the fan does not work it is a very good indication that you might be in need of a new computer. If you are able to , see if you can replace the fan yourself and go from there, otherwise your computer may have seen the light above :)

Cool fan

this could be a few different things you may not have enough memory(ram) in the computer, the video card can't handle the games because there isn't enough memory on the card. it never hurts to add another fan to cool it off better. most higher end video cards have cooling fans on them too.

Pc problems

Hi - what Wattage is the Power Supply? I think you may need around 500 watts or more.

I have had similar problems in the past caused by insufficient Power being supplied to components (including having to move my Video Card's power cable pick up to very close to the Power Supply Unit instead of coming off the tail end of the wiring harness! - this worked in my case).

Hope this helps.

Compaq presario sr2019uk noisey fan

Most likely un related. Make sure their are not wires coming near the fan to make the noise.

If its a 'grindy' sound it could just be the ball bearings wearing out. But if you just worked in their, maybe something is rubbing near it.
