Look underneath the engine should be 2 bolts and a couple of cables. Disconnect the battery first and remove the cables and bolts

1999 DODGE DIESEL WONT START ON FIRST TRY TURN KEY OFF AND TRY AGAIN AND IT FIRES RITE UP AND RUNS FINE DOESENT MATTER IF ITS HOT OR COLD

Check voltage at starter (small wire) then check starter contacts..remove starter and take it apart. If they look chewed up replaace them.

Had the same problem and found burned contacts in 97 Diesel.

I need to replace the starter on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4wd 5.9l

Easy fix my friend.

1. Unhook the battery
2. Raise and support the truck on jack stands.
3. The starter is located on the drivers side at the front of the tranny.
4. Grab an 8mm and a 13mm wrench.
5. Remove the power wires from the starter.
6. Remove the starter by removing the top bolt 9/16 i believe and the bottom nut. Also 9/16 or 5/8.
7. Carefully slide it out toward the front of the engine.
8. Installation is the same as removal.

Hope this helps.

How to remove the starter in a 1998 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine.

I believe your have to remove the grill supports under the front of the car. Disconect your battery, ground(black) wire first. Then disconect your exhaust on the front of the engine to get to the starter.

1998 6.5L diesel suburban won't start. Starter issue?

It sounds like it could also be the connection-check the wires going to it and the ground wire on the battery itself.

Starter

Here is AutoZone's online guide for your starter. If it's a matter of finding the bolts, this should help. It says there are only two unless you have a diesel. I haven't worked on a Durango myself, but have worked on other models that are just as frustrating. Good luck!
