One of my vehicles started making a rather disturbing sound so I went to investigate and to hopefully fix it.

Very common for converter to develop rattles inside. To test, when unit is cold, pound on bottom of converter with gloved hand and see if you hear the rattle.

I have a Road King, and ONLY at idle I'd get a rattle.

Found it was the rear-most mount on the right hand muffler, even though it's rubber mounted.

A tiewrap fixed that, hidden by the saddle bags.

Usually this is caused by the exhaust, and most common is the heat shield around the catalytic converter. Sometimes these can be spot welded, by I have fixed a few by putting together a few large stainless hose clamps and placing all the way around the unit and tighten them up. Sometimes the rattle is internal, and replacement is the only option. If so, rather than getting a very expensive stock replacement, you can by a universal easy flow hot rod type for about $100, plus installation.

sounds to me from the brief description like you have either a water pump rattling, or a timing chain coming slack. Is the noise coming from the alternator? Never grease pulleys, ever. also the stop squeak spray is bad for your belts. Don't know why they even sell it. If you listen carefully you may be able to pin point the rattle. Is this a tick tick tick, or a rattle rattle rattle? Does sound like a water pump rattle or timing chain slap though. Hope this helps

a rattle or knock

sounds as if you might have a bad rear bearing, real obnoxious almost painful to listen too kinda sounds. big job, but might have some part warrentee depending on age of unit

Returned to home depot. Fan was broken.
