Hi, IK circuit is engaging which basically means the picture tube is getting tired, the only "fix" is temporary (may get another year out of it). You have to increase the "screen control clockwise".
Remove back of set, follow large black or red wire attatched to picture tube down to the flyback transformer, mounted on flyback are two black controls, one is focus (leave it alone) the other is "screen", adjust it clockwise approx. 1/4 inch, remember that this is a high voltage circuit so use one hand in the set the other hand out of the set at all times, any questions ? e-mail me back, good luck, BMW Rider

I'm pretty sure the power supply is in the process of failing.
I'm pretty sure the problem is caused by a 50 cent (maximum!) part called a capacitor in the range of 4.7 - 100 uFd that is responsible for feed back that keeps the power supply ticking. If you decide to have it repaired and the problem is as above, tell the tech to use a low ESR part and add a .1-.5 uFd ceramic capacitor in parallel to the one he/she replaces. That cap will handle the fast rise times that causes the electrolytic cap to break down chemically and fail.
Before you toss it out, just take a few minutes and do searches here at Fixya on rear projection, LCD and plasma TVs. The failure rate across all brands is staggering and many of them are suffering the type of problem you are currently having but seemingly the majority are under two (2) years old. If you do decide to replace it, due diligence may save you a lot of anger if you check to see how the model or brand you are interested in is faring. I have one Wal-Mart turkey (iLo) that is a miserable conglomeration of cheap parts and unpredictable performance.

Check the set up. You may have closed captioning turned on which will show up as a black box if there is no closed captioning information for the selected channel. If that fails to resolve the problem, update this.

Sony sets have several protective circuits that blank the screen if something happens that might damage the picture tube. One of the more common causes is trouble in the vertical output circuit. Given the age of your TV (the XBR models have been around a while), this might also be a symptom of a picture tube starting to fail. Most of these sets have circuitry (called AKB) that adjusts the color drive signals to the picture tube to keep them balanced. If one of the colors is enough out of range the screen will blank. It might be the tube itself, or failure of some part in that AKB circuit. The set might also have defective parts in the input switching or video processing stages.
Unfortunately, I can't suggest any place you might look if you want to try repairing this on your own. This kind of trouble usually needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a professional TV technician who has the service information to track it down.
Hope this has been helpful. Thanks for using Fixya!
