I just purchased a compaq presario 6000 desktop on ebay and i think something must have been dislodged during shipping because when i try to turn it on, it comes on very briefly but then goes back off and a red LED light in front begins to blink. Ive opened it up but i dont know what to look for. Any ideas?
I would to make sure all the power plugs on the inside of your computer are snuggly secured. Also check to make sure the RAM sticks are plugged in correctly and that the processor is present and in place.

This problem occured for me. The Presario 6000's Power Supply has a small two prong power connector that hooks to the motherboard. Without this plugged up I found that the CPU fan wouldn't work and the CPU overheated causing the PC to cut off. So if this is of any help, look to see if there is a two prong power connector on your power supply and if so, plug it into the two prong connection slot and see if this helps your problem.
Good Luck! Jeremy

We had the same problem with our Presario 6000 when it was fresh from the box - within the first week. After haggling with Compaq they exchanged for a new one, but soon after replacement we had the problem arise again intermittently. We tried troubleshooting it for several years to no avail. Eventually we broke down and took it to our very trusted tech repair man said that the power supply was a POS and replaced it with another -completely autonomous - power supply and it has been fine since. Good luck!

I have the same problem. I even opened the power supply where I think the problem may be. Before I start to measure electronic components I will try to vacuum clean it all: sockets, components with care. In my case the computer was working and suddently it shut-down with no warning or error messages. Simply went off. If you have news about this log here. Today I will try to make it work. You spoke about a shipment: that gives me one idea: it may be broken solding points. With an hot solding iron try to rectify (with care and after all capacitors in the power supply are discharged to avoid electric shock) those soldures. Best regards,
Daniel.
