Lens will not open

My child decided to close the camera quickly one morning by pushing it shut. Now when we turn it on you can hear the gears trying to open the lens but to no avail. Then the message pops up to turn off camera and then on again. Nothing happens but frustration on my part. Is there a way I can fix this at home or do I need to seek out a reliable camera shop?

Re: lens will not open

Greetings to you all ! I took the camera assy apart and found the gear assy (cluster) which attaches and drives the main (largest) gear that powers the lens opening mech. The gear cluster is identified by a elec. solenoid attached to the black gear cluster. I removed the blk top of the cluster. (carefull as the cluster of gears are now not restrained. The gears are stacked abd can be removed in order. I was lucky to find an extreamly small piece of United Arab Emirates sand lodged in one of the teeth. The gear which is attached to the solenoid is not moveable until powered up. Reassembled and powered it up the lens opened without the grinding sound and all is well! Saved mucho $$$...Jim

Re: lens will not open

Good Day, if you hear gears trying to open the lens, then the lens assy is broken, no longer user serviceable. please call your nearest reliable shop(sony svc ctr) and ask for the lens assy price, if it fits your budget then you decide. For sure lens assy is defective. thanks

My camera turns on by itself even with the slide in front in the closed position. The screen then shows the warning that the lens cover is closed. When I open and reclose the lens cover in 10 or so...

Most likely some dirt, dust, or other particle is jamming the lens opening gears. You can try to spray some compressed air into the lens assembly, hopefully dislodging whatever is obstructing the lens cover. If this doesn't work, the camera will have to be serviced, which can be expensive. If the compressed air doesn't work, and you decide to have it fixed, get an estimate first. Often the cost of repair justifies going ahead and purchasing another camera.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps!

On my camera when i turn it on the lens keeps opening and closing and on my screen it says "turn off and on again" and when i do that the lens keeps opening and closing and it doesn't work. Can you help me...

This is the most common problem with dig cameras. The reason being that there are tiny gears inside the lens assembly, that operate it. When a tooth gets broken off, or some dirt, lint, sand, etc., gets in the lens assembly, a gear can get jammed. When this happens, the camera cannot "initialize" and be ready to take pictures. There is an excellent blog about this problem. It is listed under the lens error category, but it applies to all lens malfunctions, and the one you're having. Here it is:
Try their suggestions. They say about 50% of the cameras can be fixed trying their free fixes. If nothing works for you, and you decide to have it repaired, get an estimate first. The cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of a new camera. Good luck, and hope this helps!

Here is a quick fix to try. If you attempted to remove the focus error doing the 3 times on and off, and it didnb't help to this. Power the camera on, you will hear the gear skipping as if it is slipping. Right at the moment you turn of the camera push the lens in manually slightly and gently. This will reposition the timing of the lens to focus. This usually fixes the Focus error when the lens is stuck in the out position and never retracts. I have had this happen twice, and it cleared both times by doing this. Good Luck

When trying to power up hear 3 beeps and camera turns off.

Make sure the batteries are good and in right. If it keeps doing it you might be having a problem with your lens opening up and staying open, I had a camera that did that to me, and the lens had been knock and wouldnt open properly, check that out. The lens was out of range from normal and would automatically shut down

Kodak Easy Share Z1275 stuck lens

I have a Kodak 1275. Green light would go on the off and lens was stuck open. Now for solution that worked for me. Get a can of compressed air, like what you use for computer keyboards. Blow the compressed air all around your stuck open lens, not to fast and switch directions of where you blow air around stuck opened lens. Make sure batteries are fresh and fully charged. Tap your camera against the palm of your hand twice, not to hard or you may damage instead of jarring lens lose. Next lay your camera on a table lens facing up, push power button on so camera will try to auto focus and lens should reseat itself and lens should move freely. It doesn`t have to look dirty or dusty, little tiny particles can cause the lens to get stuck and shut off fast because it is a safety feature. If this does not work try plugging your camera into computer so the lcd screen does not try to go on , thus giving even more power to get your lens moving . Do not try to force it closed by pushing or twisting with your hand or you may cause damage that will cost as much as the camera to fix.

Sony DSC-S500

you are right it has defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
