Epson CX5400 Printer Error Light and Message

My all-in-one scanner printer won't print, even offline. When trying to do a nozzle check, for instance, it loads a few sheets of paper, moves the head across and back a few times, pauses, then goes into error with the red light on, and a message "Printer problem >>> Check documentation or call for service". It scans fine to a file (won't copy to printer), and this just happened after it was working fine, except for faded copies cause the printer had sat too long. I'd recently changed to some after market cartridges, then a piece of paper got jammed into it, which I removed, and I've disassembled the unit and verified that there is no debris whatsoever in it. I also cleaned out the excess ink and head. I've also gone as far as I can go with Epson Tech support, who just want me to return it for service (out of warranty). One other note, sometimes when it loads paper it makes chattering sounds that I believe are coming from the lower gear/cam on the right side. Regards, Bill [email protected]

Thanks for the support. As it turned out, I downloaded the Epson CX5400 manual from, and the remedies for the printer error light were plain and fell into 5 categories; print or carriage motor ohms out of spec (not likely), a latch holding the paper eject mechanism not locked down, or one of the sensors for head or paper position not functioning properly. Confident with this new information, I aerodusted both sensors, cleaned a smudge off the CR alignment strip behind the head carriage, and also reseated the head for good luck, as I'd had it out before. I ran a test and YEA VERILY it worked! Now to get the terrible ink feed to improve after numerous head cleanings and a few cartridge changes and I'm back in business.

Jackboy, that is sheer genius! I'll try it today but probably won't have the results for a few days. I was going to yank the head assembly out and soak it in an ultrasonic bath of alcohol, but this "fuel injector cleaner" solution allows you to test the results easily. I thought those spikes that pierce the cartridge were fibrous wick types, but I have some small plastic tubing that'll fit them nicely. I know this head assembly is so plugged up I've almost complete wasted a new set of cartridges using the head clean and cartridge charging features of the printer to no avail.

i had a epson multifunction printer (print/scan/copy), epson tx 111.
now, everytime i turned on the unit, it always make a grinding sound on the scanner side, opened the unit, turned on again, and looks like the scanner head (?) stuck on the end side, but the motor still running. already tried to move the scanner head to the other end side, but still the same, the head will move to the other side (right side) and then the motor will run for about 1 or 2 minutes with grinding sound (stuck), after that the unit's light on the paper & ink is on (red).
    any solution?

Fix 'Carriage Jam' : Open Door, clear carriage jam,
and then press OK to continue' error message
Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Dont know how it is in the good old US but here in UK - Epson have this super 'swap out' scheme for the more complex devices that die out of warranty. What we do - is to phone Epson and tell them the tale. they will then offer to send FedEx with a new printer and you give the driver your old one all for a quick flash of your plastic friend. If they do it - go for it.

Well now I have just the tool the cleans heads by magic.- I was given a RX420 that had sat for a year and not going to print anything.
But- my magic tool -wot I made myself- did the trick
Here is a picture of it and detail-the Fluid is Alcohol based window/windscreen cleaner.
Attach the device to the ink feed spigot in the base of the chamber and pump away until you get clear fluid back.
On this one I had to leave the device connected under pressure overnight per colour[4 nights]
    but it came true.
The tube can be anything that suits -a drinking straw/ feed tube from a disposable pump spray etc.,

My epson cx5500 does not print (test print ) I've been through a nozzle check and have fresh cartridges.... just end up with a blank page

If the inkjet printer has not been used for some time, and the ink cartridges are full then the print head nozzles may be blocked. If running the maintenance nozzle cleaning does not clear the print head nozzles then the print head will need to be replaced.
NOTE - inkjet print heads are not cheap, it may be better to purchase a new inkjet printer.

if your having a different error message pls indicate the exact error that you are getting.
