Question about Garmin GPSMAP 298 GPS Receiver

Open Question

I have Garmin gpsmap 298. The sonar has worked fine for year with transducer installation with epoxy on the bottom of the fiberglass boat. Then soundings became occasional and depth figures were available only 1/3 of the time. Now I installed a new transom mount transducer thinking that paint layers on the bottom of the boat would have prevented the proper operation of the sonar. To my surprise the new transom mount transducer works exactly the same way - only about 1/3 of time it gives figures. Rest of the time it is just blinking. Do I have wrong settings? Has the main unit something wrong?

SOURCE: gpsmap 180 firmware corrupt

It sounds like it has lost its memory battery. Usually you
would get a "memory battery low" message as it is on its
way out but you don't mention that so perhaps it has
completely failed.

The battery is rechargeable - if you leave it switched off
and loaded with a fresh set of alkalines for a few days it
may recover. If not contact Garmin as they have replaced
many memory batteries free of charge even out of warranty.

Take the unit outside and turn it on. Then select View Maps, at the top of the screen it will say either "Locating satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Once the garmin has locked onto the overhead satellites, then it will say "Ready to Navigate".

Locating Satellites take longer than Acquiring Satellites.

SOURCE: Depth Sounder does not display depth

I will see if I can get mine off the hull for testing. Still have found no procedure. Thinking about just replacing the sounder with another unit.

Short in system. if in warranty send to manufacturer. If not open the case and see if any components and wiring are damaged or wire came lose from mother board.

Garmin 551s sonar stopped working, no bottom definition or ability to see fish GPS charts and speed all work It shows 3 step image repeats top of the screen / water surface has the transducer packed

Check you transducer cable route and connections. Look for kinks, punctures, & tears in cable. Visually check the transducer for damage. #2 check the units operation on a friends boat with the same set or research a local marine repair shop to check ops. Best of luck on the problem.

Why does my screen loose depth return as soon as I am in 150 mts of water?.How come in shallower water I get a very good image but past 150 mts the screen is just scrambled and there's no bottom retur

Be sure you have your unit set in "max mode" and run it on 200khz frequency see if this makes any difference. Also be sure your unit is wired directly to your battery not through a switch or fuse panel as this can rob your unit of voltage, impacting the strength of your sonar signal.

Sonar intermittent very good through hull transducer , sonar works sometimes then will not work rest of day ,

Check the mounting location, check the cord connections, make sure the ducer is actually clicking when it is not working, otherwise either the unit or the ducer is going bad

The GSD 22 is discontinued. I would not buy any electronics that are discontinued, because there has to be a reason.

If I were in your shoes I would be looking a full change to either the brand leaders, Raymarine or Humminbird. I have had Humminbird since 2007 with a 798SI and since 2014 with a 998SI HD. 100% reliable for GPS and depth. Boat used twice a week May to October. The 998 has features to set a chart course and I do that when coming from Toronto to Port Credit. Humminbird also do full chart plotters, but in Georgian Bay, I wouldn't have thought necessary unless you use an auto-pilot. Uses Blue Chart maps.

You aren't the only one to have problems. Read the link below.

I did find this thought and there are others in the thread

Make certain that the transducer(s) cable is separated from any engine power cables. When those wires cross or are bundled together, the highly sensitive sonar signal gets polluted with high amp noise bleeding off the engine wires, and you're lucky to get any signal.
To test if this is the problem, shut your engines off and see if you get a good sonar view. Then start the engines and see if the same sonar quality is displayed. If it degrades, you've got the current bleeding problem.
I had this problem when I installed the new gear (Furuno 585, Airmar b60) and ended up re-routing the transducer cable using some "wire hangers" to keep the transducer cable away from the others. Now I get a firm fix on the bottom at all speeds and the only time the display gets lost is when I reverse the starboard engine, from air bubbles under the thru-hull.

I have a very similar problem. Unfortunately my boating season is over until next May. I found I was at software rev 2.30 and should be at 3.40 Some of the software updates were to resolve sounder problems.

I have a garmin gpsmap 440s that will only read sonar depths a no wake speed. When I increase speed much past this the depth number blinks but does not track or change until I slow back down to idle again....

Sounds like the transducer is installed at the wrong angle or in such a way that it is getting a lot of air from something on the hull. If it is a transom mount, check that it is angled correctly and not too close to the motor or aft of some kind of thru-hull fitting that will cause turbulence.

I think the transducer is down too low. Raise it up so that the center of it is in line with the bottom of the boat.

Sonar not working properly, intermittent

Generally, that indicates air bubbles in the water under the transducer. If you have a transom-mount transducer, make sure the bottom surface is level or angled slightly down. If you have a thru-hull, make sure your bottom is fairly clean in that area.
