Can using the wrong Toshiba ac adapter destroy or damage your Toshiba computer?

Take a look at the sticker on the bottom of the laptop, and also on the AC adapter you have. IF both ratings for Voltage AND Amperage match exactly (as in, say 18V, 3.8mA), AND if the connector fits snugly (no 'wiggle room' means no constant shorting, which can destroy a motherboard, believe me), then I'd try it myself, in a pinch anyway. I've found laptop adapters on a particular eBay vendor named sib-usa to be perfect matches, as long as you search their 'store' for your exact model (again, on the bottom sticker on your lappie)--and they're pretty cheap, many if not most going for under $15, including the shipping! I've bought dozens from them for my own local PC repair clients--even my own brother. Hope this helps.

I have a maxtor 120GB external hard drive but no power supply. How do I get a replacement? I tried a switchable power adapter from a local hardware shop and although I set the voltage to 12v it lights up...

Hi Dave.

The problem you are having is the adaptor you tried is the right voltage but not the correct ampage. You require a 12v dc adapter with a rating of at least 1-Amp. The switchable supply you purchased would be well under the required level, probably 400ma (milli-amp), in other words about half the needed amount. A cable modem power adapter would be sufficiant. If you have one, make sure it is the correct voltage and polarity, positive pole (+) usually the inner pin on the end of the connector. Hope this is of some help to you.

My baterry won't charge... Connected to AC adapter.. WIndows 7 shows plugged in and cheging but battery charge won't go up. I have replaced battery and AC adapter both but still same issue.

First of all, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

I need to know what the amperage rating is for the USB ports on the Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. It does not appear to be defined in the owner's manual.

most USB is 500 milli amps (which is 1/2 amp) @ 5 volts,
Some hubs can only provide 100 milli amps - but this usually when you have a dongle that give you more USB ports and it doesn't plug into some power source (to provide the extra power).
