The problem can get to the point where the game won't even load. What is happening is there is a little white plastic gear with 2 teeth that screws onto the laser. Those teeth ride into the grooves on the worm gear motor shaft. As the shaft turns the little laser gear moves the laser back and forth. After time those little teeth that are suppose to be flat wear a tiny bit and have troughs wore in them. This allows it to slip off the worm gear shaft causing the clicking noise. you simply remove it and use white lithium grease and replace it and it will work like a new one.
I hope this helps!

SOURCE: ps2 slimline parental control code

try this

  1. Bring up the screen where the unit asks you to enter in the parental code. You can either insert a restricted disc, or enter the DVD setup menu and go to "parental control" under custom setup.
  2. When the screen asks for the code, press the SELECT button, then enter in the code "7444".
  3. The level adjustment under Parental Control dictates the strictness of the player. The lower the value, the more strict it will be. Either increase the value to lower the restriction, or disable the lock entirely by setting it to "off".
  4. Once you have made your adjustments, be sure that the DVD tray is empty, and press the RESET button on the front of the Playstation 2. It is imperative the tray is clear of any DVD or game for the unit to save your settings

Don't worry about the Worm Gear for now. You have to make sure that the Motor
is fully functional by itself: Remove the Transmission Housing Cover (4 screws) and
the two screws holding the Motor down. Lift the Motor off the Worm Gear and set it
on the side (be careful of AC voltages from the Motor and Control Assembly).
Select Stir setting and observe the motor shaft. Is the Motor running? If it is,
Select other speeds to see how the motor performs.
With the motor now fully functional, you can now check the Worm Gear Follower
for worn out/broken teeth. Remember the motor drives the Worm Gear, it then in
turn drives the Worm Gear Follower (you may have to remove the grease to see it)
The Bevel Gear sits right on top of the Follower and drives the Attachment Gear.

My ps2 wont read discs and we tried a disk cleaner

try a cleaning disc, if that does not work, the dvd mech is defective, try using some canned air to blow out debris from the worm gear assembly

PS2 was dropped, now disc won't spin and can't be read.

I just looked at a friend's PS2. Same story, tripped over cord, unit fell to floor. Unit powers up and sys. config. screen comes on but the drive didn't seem to be spinning up. Opened the case and found that the shaft of the drive motor for the laser tray had popped out of it's centering retainer ( little black bushing/holder). With the top off the unit, looking at the unit from the front, on the right side in the rear corner you'll see the motor. The worm shaft (bronze colored rod) runs towards the front of the unit. Where it ends it should sit centered in a black plastic holder, if it's off to the side a little pressure will pop it back in. Put the cover back on, and power it up, you should hear the drive spinning up. If it does you should be set. Hope this helps.

PS2 not reading disks

Your lazer lense has bit the dust. Depending on your model type the first gen systems lazers are very easy to replace. The later versions sony made it harder to replace. You can find out what model you have by looking at the back of your PS2 then you can either call sony or go to there website and find out what generation PS2 you have. Then go from there. Hope this helps

PS2 dropped

Open the case of the PS2 slim. You will notice the worm gear that is responsible for moving the Laser sled back and forth has popped out of its plastic retaining socket. Pop it back in.

Ps2 slim line

if the laser is moved to the middle of the area and when you first turn it on it doesn't go back to starting possession's then some thing is wrong with the motor drive more than not it's likely you have a crack in the board.

HELP

The laser is slipping on the worm gear that moves it. You will need to need to open your playstation and check to make sure the rails are properly greased so it is able to move without resistance. Also, check the tiny plastic arm(or metallic) to see if it has worn down.

If you hear a click click click...that is the sound of a dead laser. Or close to it.

Google playstation 2 repair and you should be able to find many free guides to assist you with your problem, if you are a tiny bit handy.

Disc reading sound ps2 slim

Check around where the laser connects to the worm gear that moves it up and down. You may have some lint wrapped around the worm gear. Also check the disc spindle motor for Lint trapped under it. It could be your laser lens getting dirty.
Clean the Slims lens with a Q-tip and Window Glass Cleaner.
  1. Lightly Dampen one of the tips of the Q-tip with Glass Cleaner
  2. Swab the laser lens with the dampened Q-tip.
  3. Clean and dry of the laser lens with the dry tip of the Q-tip
Good luck

PS2 dic read help!!!

Hi Anishpp,

You have a great console, it just needs some tuning. The arm that moves the laser up and down the rails may have become clogged with lint. I usually clean it out and flex it to apply more pressure down on the worm gear.
