The head needs to be rebuilt. You can get a kit to do this. Make sure you have a torque wrench to get the bolts set right.

SOURCE: Air compressor head gasket diagram

Campbell hausfeld has all their manuals on line at www.chpower.com / you can enter the model # of the whole unit or just the # of the pump. Also you can enter just a partial number example wl650 for a list of models is that range. Use caution when installing gaskets for chpower oiless pumps. Some of their gaskets are very brittle. After installing parts, turn pump by hand to make sure all parts are in their proper place and that there is suction. Enjoy

SOURCE: hose from compressor to air tank

Campbell hausfeld parts are available at www.chpower.com, however, you can use standard parts like copper tube or rubber pressure hose available at Lowes lumber or True Value Hardware. Check for cause of failure of the airline, could be from vibration due to loose motor mount or faulty check valve at tank causing back pressure. Enjoy

My Porter Cable pancake air compressor is getting too hot and melting my air hose

ASSUMING THIS IS AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR, IF THE COMPRESSOR USES OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHOULD CUT OFF AT 125 PSI AS THE ACT OF COMPRESSION HEATS THE AIR QUITE HOT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OIL THAT PASSED THE PISTON RINGS IN THE COMPRESSED AIR. IF THE COMPRESSED AIR GETS HOT ENOUGH, THE OIL VAPOR CAN IGNITE AND THE FLAME CAN CARRY TO THE TANK FOR AN IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION. THIS ORDINARILY DOES NOT HAPPEN BELOW 175PSI OR MORE.

OILLESS COMPRESSORS CAN BE SET TO 150 PSI. WITH EITHER TYPE OF COMPRESSOR, THE HOSE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR OR THE REGULATOR STACK, NEVER TO THE COMPRESSOR, AS THE COMPRESSED AIR LOSES MUCH OF ITS HEAT WHILE IN THE RECEIVER. IF THE WHOLE TANK IS GETTING HOT ENOUGH TO MELT A PROPERLY ATTACHED HOSE, YOU HAVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION, CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH, UNLOADER VALVE AND RELIEF VALVE. THE RELIEF VALVE SHOULD OPEN AT NO MORE THAN 150 PSI, THE UNLOADER VALVE OPENS WHEN THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHUTS THE MOTOR OFF, AND SHOULD ONLY HISS FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IT DUMPS THE PRESSURE ONLY IN THE COMPRESSOR AND THE LINE FROM THE COMPRESSOR TO THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE. IF THE UNLOADER VALVE HISSES MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS, THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE IS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE SERVICED, CLEANED OR REPLACED. IF THERE IS CARBON BUILD UP IN THE VALVE, THERE IS EXCESS OIL PASSING THE COMPRESSOR PISTON RINGS, REPLACING THEM MIGHT FIX THAT IF THE CYLINDER OR RING LANDS ON THE PISTON ARE NOT TOO TAPERED OR WORN.

Why can`t my compressor pump over ten pounds ?

You didn't state what model compressor you have so in gerneral: if you have no leaks, remove the air pump head to check the reed valves on the valve plate and the condition of the piston, piston ring(s) and cylinder. If the reed valves are broken or warped from heat they won't seal properly. If the piston ring(s) are broken or the cylinder is badly scored air will leak past the piston instead of compressing and going into the tank.

Compressor motor runs but does not make compessed air

Some of the things for you to check are for any leaks anywhere, the valve plate assembly, the piston and cylinder assembly and the con-rod. If you have any leaks that let air out as fast as the piston is trying to pump it in you won't get any compressed air. Check the drain valve on the bottom of the tank and the air line from the pump to the tank. If any of the reeds on the valve plate assembly are bent or broken they won't seal the way they need to in order to compress air. If the cylinder is badly scored or the piston rings are scored or broken the piston won't pump compressed air into the tank. If the con-rod is broke the piston won't work at all.

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

I have a husky scout 1.5 gallon air compressor. It only builds pressure to about 38 psi. It doesn't build up any more pressure.

You have either warped or broken reed valves on the valve plate or a broken piston ring and/or a damaged cylinder. Any of these will allow a small amount of air compression but as the tank gets pressure in it, it gets harder to push more air into it. If the reed valves or piston to cylinder seal is compromised more and more air will leak past the bad reed or the piston as the pressure goes up in the tank. You'll have to disassemble the air pump to find out what's damaged and needs replacing.

What would cause hose from pump to tank on a porter cable pancake comressor get extremely hot when running

It is normal for the line going from the compressor to the tank to get very hot in all air compressors. Compressing air creates allot of heat. It will get hot enough to cause burns if touched.

Compressor will only hold 20 lbs and looking for some troubleshooting ideas

First check for obvious air leaks:
1. The drain valve on the bottom of the tank.
2. The air hose, both end connectors and the length of the air hose.
3. The air pump, where the line comes out of the pump and where it goes into the tank.
A spray bottle with soapy water works well for this. Sprayed on these areas, look for bubbles indicating a leak. If the motor/air pump is hot make sure the bubbles are not from the solution boiling away.
If these check out, you may have a damaged valve plate or piston/cylinder assenbly. Damage to either will not let the pump move enough air to fill your tank. To check these you have to remove the pump head. The check valve(s) are on a plate directly under the head. Check that the reed(s) are not chipped, cracked or broken off. They have to be in perfect condition to seal the incoming and outgoing air holes so air can be compressed enough to fill the tank. If OK, check the piston and cylinder. They have to be in very good condition to compress the air also. Some times the ring(s) around the piston get damaged and won't seal to the cylinder well. If any of these are damaged you'll have to replace them to get a good seal so air can be compressed and forced into the tank.

To much oil in tanks air not building up fast

It sounds like your fault could be worn rings on the compressor pistons causing slow pressure buildup and excessive oil in tank. Replacing rings, checking poppet valves for proper sealing and having cylinder bores honed should fix problem.

If your compressor is the oil-less type the cylinder and compression ring should be replaced when it takes an unusually  long time to fill tank. A rebuild kit is available thru www.chpower.com Good luck with your project.
