MCS 160 Boston Subwoofer ZD3 Zener Diode Value

My Boston Subwoofer would not power on. I took the unit apart and found that the Zener Diode located at ZD3 on the power supply board is fried. I'm need to know the value so I can replace it. Any help would be fantastic.

ZD3 is a 18v zener. Also check the surface mount resistor on the back of the board that is attached to ZD3, I think it is R9. Should be 10 ohms. This resistor sometimes opens when the diode goes short.

I replaced the zener diode and still no luck. Going to try the resistor now. Any other suggestions?

Would the resistor make the unit not have sound? I replaced the diode and I got the power back but still have no sound coming from it.

yes. if the resistor is bad, then I believe the light will stay red instead of going green and you will not have any sound

How do you repair blown Boston Acoustics Subwoofer MCS Amp?

Most often this unit goes dead because of zener diode ZD3 shorting. It is a 18v zener. replace this and you should be back in business.

Sub woofer not turning on

Is it receiving power? If not that is your answer - could be a blown fuse, bad wire, bad connection, etc.

If power is there and it still does not work then the problem coud be with a bad sub woofer on/off switch, internal fuse, or worse, blown amp from over driving.

My subwoofer had no sound or power. I replaced the ZN3 diode and now I have power but still no sound. Any suggestions?

If this is a boston acoustics sub, then I assume you replaced ZD3. You also need to check R9 on the back of the board. It is a surface mount resistor and should read 10 ohms. This resistor sometimes goes open when the diode shorts.

Boston acoustics subwoofer won't turn on

Hello
Did you find the value of ZD3.
I need it too.
I have the same problem, and I take out the ZD3 and the subwoofer works. But I'm not sure that is correct. I think it may be the circuit stand by.

ZD stands for zener diode and used for exact voltage regulation. Take out a known good one and go to a repair shop to replace. Make sure that when you re install, the striped (polarity) markings are in the same direction!

My Boston Acustic subwoofer connected to my Denon Avr 1312 is not turning on the les light on back of subwoofer dobt even come on had fuse checked but its not blown.

There is a common problem with a zener diode in that amp that goes bad. ZD3 is a 18v zener and it goes short. Sometimes R9 on the back will open when this happens. Need to have them replaced.

zd3 is a zenna diode, you will need to find the volts that it triggers at, most amps (99%) have a mirror circuit board so all components are dobbled so this will help you find what you need Re: Jeff

Mcs 160 subwoofer no power

I had the same problem with my subwoofer unit. I found the zener diode ZD3 was fried. The pic below shows the diode and its clearly tagged ZD3. You need a multimeter to check this before you order anything. This diode should only transmit power in one direction. Its size and spec is 18v .5w zener diode. (that's 1/2 w) It's very inexpensive and the whole repair took about an hour. This is from a Boston Acoustics subwoofer MCS 160
Ok..the procedure is easy.
1) unplug the unit and bring it to a well lit work area.
2) remove the panel from the back and locate the board that is held to the panel by 4 screws and has the ZD3 diode. The pic below shows the diode at the end of my test lead. Note the direction of this part and reinstall the new one in the same direction. Its a simple de-solder and re-solder project. I elevated the new diode about 1/8 " from the board with a small strip of copper. This acted as a heat sink during the soldering and elevated the part above the board to help it dissipate heat later when in use.
3) re-install the board and plug in all the connections.
4) this worked for me and I'm enjoying my sound system again!..good luck0482b949-8492-43a6-91df-0fb2f0e6888b.jpg
