Sewing machine top tension discs very loose

repairing it yourself, without any training or mechanical skills could be problematic, given that you have already rejected 'new part' as a solution.

Rust inside of tension dial

If your tension knob is on top of the machine, it should be possible to unscrew the knob anti clock wise. Make sure the spring and other washers are not jumping out. Also check the position of the parts to know how to place it back into position once you finished cleaning.

How do i fix the tension? i've been playing with the knobs for hours, but the threads are still too loose on the fabric.

Try decreasing your stitch width and this should help. Put your tension dials on 4. Also make sure when you thread your machine your presser foot lever is up to allow you to get your threads through your tension discs properly. To test the tension (usually set at 4 on all 4 knobs) when you thread around the knobs pull the thread on both ends like you're using dental floss around the discs under the knobs so you can feel the pull (tension) on the thread. Let me know if this works for you.

Bottom tension too loose.

Is it looping on the bottom of the fabric? If so this is a top tension issue, you need to check some things,

-make sure you thread the machine with the pressure foot up ( this allows the tension discs to open up so you can pull the fabric away from the machine with the foot up and allows the thread to get to bottom of the tension discs)

-make sure your tension settings are set to the medium setting. (Usually 4 or 5)

If this still does not help, then turn the top tension knob up (from 5 to 6,7,8,9....)

-If that still doesn't do it, your probably need the tensions reset. Let me know if you need more help.

Took apart tension button on sewing machine

This could be tricky, look on line for a diagram of a typical tension assembly. There aren't that many parts but they can be put on in the wrong order. There is probably a set screw somewhere that has vibrated loose, you need to tighten it after replacing the unit.

I took the tension apart for a kenmore 148.15600 model

Hi - unfortunately, putting the tension back together takes alot of training - not only do you have to re-install the parts correctly so the hook is in the correct position and the bobbin is in the correct position when the needle moves down thru the needle plate and into the bobbin case to pull up the bobbin thread. Further, you need to set what called the timing - your needle needs to enter the bobbin dead on center and to a very precise depth. Technicians often use a special tool to set the timing, because each machine has a different a different hook and bobbin case.

I know this won't win me any points, but you will probably need to take the machine to a repair shop to have the hook replaced or reinstalled. If you mechanically inclined, you can search the web for a service manual for your machine - the service manual will illustrate how to replace the hook and specify the timing and needle depth settings.

Good luck,
Ginny
