How to Sharpen a Black and Decker Hedge Hog sharpen-black-decker-hedge-hog-800x800.jpg Maintaining the sharpness of electric timmers can made landscape trimming easier with beautiful results.

Electric hedge trimmers make trimming hedges and bushes easier and quicker than using manual hand-powered trimmers. Electric trimmers, the most popular type in the U.S., cost less and require less maintenance than gasoline-powered models. Electric trimmers are used most often by homeowners with the Black and Decker Hedge Hog series being very popular. While they are not premium products, electric trimmers like the Black and Decker Hedge Hog trimmer can keep trimming reliably for years with proper maintenance, including sharpening the blade's teeth.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need

  • Work table
  • Two medium size clamps
  • Dremel tool or similar hand-held multi-purpose tool
  • Grinding wheel attachment for hand-held tool.
  • Dremel 971 (or similar) aluminum oxide grinding sharpening stone with a tip small enough to cover the flat facet of a Hedge Hog blade tooth
    • 1 Unplug the electric trimmer before trying to sharpen the teeth.
    • 2 Clamp the electric trimmer to the work table using two clamps if necessary so the Hedge Hog is firmly held down with the blade teeth accessible over the edge of the work table.
    • 3 Insert and secure grinding tip in hand-held multi-purpose tool.
    • 4 Maneuver the grinding tip so it is perpendicular to the facet of the Hedge Hog tooth.
    • 5 Sharpen teeth in one direction, being careful to try and maintain the same cutting edge angle on the sharpened tooth of no less than 35 degrees.
    • 6 Make same number of grinding passes/grind the same length of time a few seconds on each tooth.
Tips & Warnings
  • This task should take about 15 minutes.
  • Keep a light touch; too much force can break the grinding surface.
  • For best results, insert the sharpening bit slightly less than all the way into the tool.

Sharpen chain with an electric sharpener

Hi there,

Having cut a lot of wood when I was younger I know from experience just how important a sharp chain is.You need a guide so all the teeth cut at the same angle. If I were doing it now I would use an outfit like this. You will find that when your out cutting that it won't take much to dull a chain and that cuts in to the sprocket that turns the chain.A sharpe chain will throw big chips whill a dull chain will through out small chips because it's scratching the wood instead of cutting it off.We just used files without guides.I never did get the hang of that But my partner did. This is what I would use today.By the way never use a chain saw alone ,that way you have some one to help you if something goes wrong. I always add this for your information. If this is not the solution that you are looking for please re post because when we pick a question to answer FixYa takes it out of the questions.I am not endorsing this site just the type of tool.

I have bought a rotatry tool that came with accessories but I don't know which accessories to use for what job. It is hard to identify which accessory is what. Did not come with illustration of what each...

I assume you mean something like a Dremel high speed rotary tool with various bits. Here are some general guidelines....
You can divide the bits into three groups - cutting, grinding, and polishing.
The cutting tools will have the largest (relatively) teeth, some look like little gears. These are suitable for fairly soft materials like wood and plastic, and maybe drywall. They are useful for carving.
The grinding tools are either small stones (these are very hard, not rubber) or they have a fine coating of diamonds glued to a metal surface. Both are used for grinding hard stuff like metal, ceramics or glass. The diamond coated ones can grind very hard materials. The stone ones can wear down, but remain usable. Grinding is handy for sharpening and for removing small amounts of metal to shape it - but this is a pretty slow process. You can also etch glass by grinding it, but be sure to keep a little water on the glass or the local heating of the glass will break it.
The polishing tools are hard rubber or fabric or little wire brushes. These are good for polishing things, mostly metal. I find the little wire brush bits very useful for cleaning up corroded contacts in flashlights and other battery-operated devices.
Be sure to wear safety glasses with any of these bits, but especially the wire brushes as they tend to throw out those little wires!
Let me know if you would like any more help. Thanks for using Fixya, and good luck.

Looking for sharping stone from efco fl64 /8 chain

There are multiple chain sizes 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/32", 7/32" and 3/8" chains so the /8 chain number has me guessing. After the qurestions below, here is my best guess.

Also is this for a chain grinder?" or

Are you looking of a hand held type stone?

Aluminum Oxide Chainsaw Sharpening Grinding Stone
or Ceramic stone?

I will assume that your looking for aluminum oxide stones at this time.

http://www.oregonchain.com/homeowner/products/accessories/replacement_stones.htm

This is wide selection of sharpening stones.

You can also use hand held chain sharpening files of the same size that have shapening angles marked on the file set fixture.

Hopefully you have a sharpening guide that will keep your angles correct while shapening.

A safety note: Improperly sharpened chainsaw blades can be very dangerous to the user.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Sharpening techniques??

I have been using a bit of edge sharpening lately in combination with smaller & smaller amounts of overall USM. I know Thom Hogan's CD for the S2 had his version as a PS Action and there are others that do the same around. I eventually made my own custom action for it. Can be used most effectively to sharpen an image while leaving noisy areas alone.
