SOURCE: replace recoil starter for Homelite trimmer Model UT21546

My UT21546 has 2 springs, the regular recoil one and a what I'll call a anti kickback one. the top of the anti kickback spring kept coming unsecured and finally I just deleated it alltogther and screwed the 2 plates tightly togehter and the near new unit works better than new now.

Yes, I have a Craftsman 25 cc Gas Trimmer and we just snapped the starter cord. Do you have to open up the head to fix this? Does it need a special type of cord?

Yes you have to remove the plastic recoil assembly and install a certain size cord. We use a #3 or 3.5 cord on all our string trimmers, blowers with that size engine.

How to change the starting rope of weedwreker 32cc.

I know this info isn't in the users manual and I haven't found a "repair"manual yet but there is probably something out there. Some disassembly will be required for you to reach the point where you can actually service the starter/recoil unit with new rope. Torx head screws are used exclusively on these units and some patience and diligence will get you to the recoil unit. Be forewarned if you do it yourself....there is some work involved removing items.

Pulley cord wont go down unable to start on gas trimmer

Your cord wont recoil?

You should remove the recoil cover and see if you can rewind the rope manually.

It isnt too hard and will let you know immediately if you need to replace the recoil.

Just the recoil unit by loosening the three or four bolts and lift it off the trimmer. Turn it over and look at the recoil spool. There should be a notch in it. This is were you catch a bit of the starter rope and start turning it in the direction of normal rotation. Normal rotation will put tension on the recoil spring.
When you put 4-6 turns into it just let it recoil and see if it pulls all the rope back in. That's it. If the cord didnt recoil something inside the recoil has broken and you need to get the unit serviced or replaced. Most of the time the cost of repairing something like this is prohibitive. Its a better idea to just replace the whole unit.

Good luck and be careful!

Rope to start want recoil

The starter pawls on this model are exposes to weather. You can usually spray WD-40 directly to the flywheel pawls and loosen with a screwdriver.
