Troy bilt lawn mower

I have a troybilt push mower with Honda 160cc engine, bought March 2010 at Lowes. Use it maybe 5 times a year. The mower started vibrating, I look under it and the three bolts holding the engine to the frame or housing are cracking off, ie, the housing is cracking all around the bolts, two spots competely separated, the other one barely holding on...is this a common problem, is it fixable?

This is not a common problem. The bolts are at fault. You can replace them and it will work but make sure they are the right bolts and you put them in tight.

SOURCE: lawn mower

It's possible the rope came out of it's pulley groove and is jammed inside the engine housing.

SOURCE: Its starts but will cut off

The problem you are having is due to dirt and gunk in the carbeurator. Spray a carbeurator cleaner into the air chamber [remove the air filter] and run it a couple of times then let it sit for two hours while the carbeurator cleaner does its job of dissolving any debris. Then start it up. IF this does it, great, if not repeat the cleaning technique.

If all of this doesn't do it, then the carbeurator will have to be removed and either replaced or rebuilt.

SOURCE: troy bilt mower won't stay running to cut lawn

You may want to check the gas cap to see if it clogged with dirt. If the gas cap is clear, you more than likely have a carburetor problem. If you need tips on carb. cleaning, feel free to ask.

Replace engine, only 1 yr. warrenty. Engine about $119 at Harbor Freight. Easy to change out. all Harbor Freight engines are Hondas. Bolt pattern same. 160cc or 190cc will work. Remove blade, remove mounting screws, replace engine. Carb may be the same for throttle connections. Reinstall blade. 10 pulls required to start engine 1st time. 1 pull after that. Pull 1/2 way 4 times 1st to prime even if you use the primer bulb. Ensure oil is full, 30w oil. Excellent engines good for 7-8 yrs with proper maintenance. Observe cable connections before old engine removal. Take pics.

Hello,
My name is Dane. Troy-Bilt says this mower has a 2 year warranty with a briggs engine. According to troy bilt, that engine is suppose to start in 2 pulls or they fix it for free. Take it to a local briggs dealer and get them to look at it. I would hate to have you try something and you void your warrenty somehow. Here's the link to the website.

sounds like the throttle cable has slipped on the side of the engine if they dont pull the choke all the way on they wont start too well. one way to find out is take your air cleaner and outer cover off so you can see in the front of the carby the put your throttle on start/choke position the choke butterfly should be closed if not check your cable.
