Really need to know if it acts like it wants to stall or if in fact when you let the pedal up it does stall ? Because they're closely related yet 2 different types of problems. One could be a safety switch problem the other could be one of a few different issues. Can you let us know if it does stall or are you pushing the clutch/brake pedal down before it does ?

SOURCE: Craftsman lawn tractor model new battery drains quickly...

it could be the stator in the engine check the voltage with the volt meter when its running if its low check connections on battery & voltage if its below 12.5 volts then its the stator but the only thing is the engine should run with-out the battery so there is something else going on there is a fuse in the electrical system if theres a short that fuse will blow & engine will stall

hi there

here is web site for manual and parts diagram

http://www.hammerwall.com/Download_Manual/12377/

have the valves been adjusted correctly ? or could have a tight valve clearance
and when gets warm holds valve open - looses power

your engine will be 31p777 intek ohv avs

run the piston to tdc on compression stroke , then turn piston past tdc & set piston is 1/4 inch down the bore on power stroke this eliminates decomprssor lift from the setting

intake should be 0.003 Thou
and exhaust 0.005t thou

then check the carburettor main jets and emulsion tube and pilot jets and air bleeds and progression ports for obstruction etc for restriction / blockage

check fuel flow from tank to carb , check that the fuel solenoid has got continual 12 volt supply
when switched on and does not go o/c cutting fuel supply to main jet

have a look let me know

cheers hope it helps

Cuts out when I let out the clutch

try and find a relay, near the engine, which is connected to the safety switches attached to the seat and clutch/brake pedal. you may find that relay to be bad, or you need to replace or short the safety switches. If you short them, might be a safety issue as the engine and blades will run unattended. Seems to be a very common problem with craftsman lawn tractors.

HELPING A FRIEND WITH A CRFTSMN 18HP FRNT ENGINE LT2000 LAWN TRACTOR. THE ENGINE RUNS GREAT BUT WHEN HE RELEASES THE CLUTCH/BRAKE TO GO FORWARD OR REVERSE THE ENGINE DIES.

Put trans in neutral if trans is a gear drive and see if mower can be pushed, if it can you can push rule out stuck brake. If you have a hydrostatic trans you can put trans in bypass and push to see if brake is stuck. Remove drive belt at engine or at trans and try the cluch, if motor stays running there is a trans problem.
