Electric Pool Heater Tripping Out!

Hi Guys, I have a Purex Islander Electric pool heater. I have recently opened the pool up for the Summer and the heater keeps tripping out. I have checked inside and there are no loose wires. I turn the heater on and the botton two orange lights come on. A few minutes later the "heat" light comes on and the heater trips out! I have tried disconnecting the two wires from the top of the coil, but it still trips out.. I turned down the heat dial to the lowest setting and the two lights were on, then as I turned it up, the "heat" light comes on and off goes the electric.

Hi Brad, I have this diagram, I just don't know which item is causing the problem!

The coil which is 5 on the chart and then is either a or b depending on the wattage of the unit that you have. You can either unhook it from the source or check it with a meter for resistance and shorts to ground to see if it is bad.

Thanks Brad, I have tested it for continuity and it is fine. What else should I test it for?

  • Brad Brown Jul 21, 2013

The heater coil is actually a wire surrounded by ceramic powder and enclosed in a tube. Over time the wire can push the powder away and when it gets hot it touches the tube that is metal and causes a short this is hard to test for. If you hook a meter up to the coil and have it set for voltage and turn it on it should read 220 VAC. Then when it shorts out and throws the breaker, switch to ohms and measure the resistance from the coil to the case of the heat which would be ground. If it cools off, it could be ok

SOURCE: reliant 40 gallon tall electric water heater replaced both thermostats upper and lower elements flushed tank hot water very hot temp turned down lowest possible keeps tripping reset button what else c

Problem has to be bad element or bad thermostat.

Test elements for short to ground through metal tank wall:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html

Make sure factory-installed insulation and cover are re-installed over new thermostats so they do not misread tank temperature.
If problem does not show with elements, then replace thermostats again.

Your tank has a GFCI circuit breaker?
Maybe you mean ECO reset button located on upper thermostat?

If GFCI circuit breaker is tripping, turn power off, open covers inspect for burned parts, and test elements. Copy following link for troubleshoot walk-thru:

80 gal Whirl Pool electric water heater. Does it have 1 thermostat or 2?

There are two ways to tell:
1) See if tank has 2 removable panels on side.
2) Look at label on side of tank for upper and lower element wattage.
