A message saying " AC Power adapter cannot be determined. Please connect a Dell 65 Watt AC adapter." Appears every time I plug in the Dell AC adapter that came with the laptop.

It would appear that you have a broken connection on the power connector on the motherboard of the laptop or a broken wire on the AC adapter. Repair of the connector on the motherboard could run about $125-$150 at a trustworthy repair shop. AC adapter replacement may be $25 over EBay.

ofcourse the battery will mostly die ina year for most of the dell notebooks.... mainly when u always keep the notebook in the ac power and not using the battery power so much for your notebook...
the best way to keep the battery life extended is to use the battery until it is drained and then charge it and again use it fully until drianed ...
There at least three possible reasons for your problem. . 1) You are using the wrong charger, or 2) Your battery may be defective, or 2) If you are using the original charger that came with your laptop, it may be defective, or 3) Your laptop charging port may need to be replaced.
You need to take your laptop to a local computer repair shop to have the problem correctly diagnosed.
It sounds like you are using a 65 watt AC adapter or an Auto Air Adapter.
The system needs a 90 watt adapter to charge the battery while the system is on.
When you received the system as out of the box and you get this message "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determind" let the Dell tech service know that they sent you a wrong or incorrect type of AC Adapter.
If this message not was not appearing before it just happened recently try to download and install the latest BIOS version from the support site.
If all fails remove the batt and check if laptop can work with AC adapter alone, because issues like AC not determine may not charge the battery and laptop may not work with AC as well, maybe laptop is already running on battery power.
It is a possible AC adapter problem. However please try to download the BIOS firmware update from Dell's website and see if problem exists. If it does, then try using another AC adapter (preferably the same model and make) and see if the same problem occurs. Please reply if same issue occurs.
if it is under warranty please take it to the service center if you try doing anything by yourself that may damage the warranty and it may pinch your pocket,
