Flash is only good to about 5ft. Any farther than that and you should be using higher ISO, longer exposure time, wider aperture (lower F number), or any combination of the 3.

Longer exposures work best for still scenes and require a VERY steady hand, tripod or stable surface to put the cam on but the result is worth is as seen in this photo I took at around 3:00am one day.

There are 4 inks, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. When the black runs out, you are left with sort of a dark purple or brown color.

On power up the view screen is dark with a few vertical coloured lines. will take a photo but the result is just a dark screen. Old photos on the camera can be viewed normally. Menu and all other functions...

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Why are the areas that should be black on a photo coming out dark red. All the cartridges are working properly as I have printed a test page and recently removed the head for cleaning.

Poor quality photographs

I think this is down to your choice of lens. If you have the kit lens, it is pretty poor unless in bright sunlight. You could try keeping the shutter open longer using AV+/- or increasing the ISO but this increases the chance of a blurry photo. Remember the sensor on the Canon is huge compared to the Kodak - so more light will need to enter the lens to expose it properly. This is why SLR lenses are huge compared to compact cameras.

INSIDE PHOTOS ARE DARK AND GRAINY

Regardless of the camera make/model... dark, grainy photos are usually a result of a lighting problem. Looking at the specs for your camera, the flash is only speced for 4m. If you are shooting near or above this you might have trouble. I ended up using an external flash that is triggered by sensing the cameras flash. Pretty inexpensive and pics ar 10x better. Try a local camera shop or B&H Photo (NYC) is where I got mine set up on line.
