How do I slave a cd-rom drive in a dimension 1100

Most CD or DVD drives installed in modern computers have a group of short jumper pins on the rear of the drive that determine the master or slave setting for the device. The master or slave setting helps to identify the drive when it shares a connector cable inside the computer with another device, such as a hard drive or even another optical drive. Without the master or slave jumper setting, the computer would not be able to tell one device from another or from which drive to retrieve or write data. Configuring a CD drive as master or slave is a relatively simple task that takes only a couple of minutes.
Turn the CD drive so that you view the rear of the unit, then check the position of the jumper covers on the set of pins next to the power adapter plug. If the CD drive will be the only device on the IDE data ribbon cable, set the jumper cover on the two pins farthest away from the power connector. This position is the master drive setting, and, by default, most CD drives ship with this configuration. In most cases, if the CD drive is the only device connected to the cable, you do not need to change the jumper setting. Determine if you need to change the CD drive jumper setting if the device will share a connector cable with a hard drive or another optical drive. If the CD drive will be the primary (master) device on the cable, do not change the jumper setting. If the CD drive will be the secondary (slave) device on the cable, continue to the next step to change the setting. Use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or your fingers to remove the jumper cover from the CD drive if the unit will be the secondary device on the IDE ribbon cable. Set the cover over the pair of pins next the pair from which you removed it, then press it until it completely covers the pins. The jumper is now in the slave setting position.

NEED JUMPER SETTINGS FOR MASTER HARD DRIVE

Set The Jumper Setting On Your Hard Disk Drive

The hard disk drive will be detected as 32 GB if the jumper is set to the 32 GB clip pin setting. The common jumper settings for Samsung hard disk drives are listed below. Please check the label on your hard disk drive for the correct jumper setting.

Important: Use the alternate jumper setting listed below under General Pin Setting. After changing the jumper, partition and format your hard disk drive.

Configuring your Hard Disk Drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) - Setting the Jumper

If this is the only HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Master.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Slave.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, and the first drive is set to Cable Select, set the pin setting to Cable Select.
If you are replacing the HDD in your computer, set the jumper setting to match that of the drive you are replacing.

Cable Select:

This setting is the default setting for PATA/IDE hard disk drives. With the Cable Select jumper setting, the BIOS determines whether a hard disk drive is Set as Master or Set as Slave by it's position on the UDMA cable.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the black connector on the end of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Master for that PATA controller.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the grey connector on the middle of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Slave for that PATA controller.

Note: When using Cable Select, your system must meet the following conditions:
Your systems host controller must support Cable Select.
Your hard drives must support Cable Select.
Your cable must support Cable Select.

Set as Master:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Slave, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

Set as Slave:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Master, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

32 GB Clip Pin Setting:

Use this on computers manufactured before November 1998 when either you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disk drive controller failure", or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing a new drive. This occurs when the hard disk drive is too large for the BIOS to support.

If after performing the troubleshooting procedure listed above, the full capacity of your hard disk drive is not recognized, click here for information about obtaining a system BIOS update. If you are unable to update your BIOS, another option would be to create a second partition with the remaining unallocated disk space.

Jumper settings for master drive

if its a SATA hard driveyou dont need to set master slave the biggest capacity hard drive will set as master

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to IDE-1 means Pri slave escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

you will have to have master with slave set up
you can find the jumper location next to the power on a hard drive and the settings for plastic jumper location is usually printed on the top of a hard drive
IDE-0 means Pri master
IDE-1 means Pri slave
IDE-2 means Sec master
IDE-3 means Sec slave

single or master :::::
master with slave ::'::
slave :::':
black line between dots is plastic jumper
note the plastic jumper is ' located at the rear of the hard drive between the EIDE and electrical lead/s

How the jumper setting is done for maxtor n256j50

If this is an IDE/PATA hard drive then the jumper settings are marked on the circuit board.
MA = master
SL = slave
CS = cable select
If this hard drive is the one installed on the Primary IDE controller the the jumper has to be set to Master. If it won't boot up then the jumper needs to be set to Cable select.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the 2nd connector on the IDE data cable that is connected to the primary IDE controller then the jumper must be set to Slave.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the secondary IDE controller and there is no other drive on the IDE data cable other than this hard disk the the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave.
If there is a CD drive on this cable too then the drives on this data cable then the jumpers on each drive must be set differently, they cannot be set the same jumper setting.

Need IDE jumber settings.

There is a little jumper block on the rear of a DVD. by IDE connector. on the case above there will be a Table marked . Master: Slave: CS. Now, you must set the jumper as to your drive's position. IE: Master or Slave, Master is on the plug at the END of the ribbon, the Slave is on the "Other" one. Accordingly the Master has the Master Jumper ON, the Slave the Slave Jumper ON. CS is Cable Select. It isn't all that used.

I want to add another hard drive and need to know how to set the jumpers on my maxtor 90645d3 please help.ty

if you want to boot from this drive, please set the jumper to the master position.

if this drive is for additional storage, please set the jumper to slave. and make sure 1st hard drive is set to master.

if this is the only drive in the system, please set the jumper to single or remove the jumper.

there will be a chart telling you which pins are for which setting in the jumper area, which is between the data plug and the power plug on the back of your HDD.

main thing that will cause drives to not work is 2 jumpers on the same cable and they both are set to the same thng.. i.e. master/master or slave/slave. also, if one is set to single drive it will likely bypass the slave drive.

I NEED HELP HOOKING UP MY WESTERN DIGIAL WD5000G032

If this drive is only for storage it can be set as a slave drive. If it will have the OS installed and will be the boot drive it has to be set as master. Set the jumpers accordingly. If a different drive is the master you might check the jumpers on that also. I have seen some drives with a (master/slave present) jumper that might need to be changed as well. Most WD drives have a jumper settings diagram on the case.
