Hi Chip, I too have a model 12AGA26E011 which has suddenly stopped being self propelled. I'm looking into how to remove the top cover so I can get to the belt and drive mechanism to determine what is amiss. If i have any luck I will let you know. obviously others that have posted here are stating the obvious but not answering your question. If you happen upon the solution please provide an update. Thanks! Doug

Hi again Chip. After some more poking around, I found that there are 9 hex bolts that hold the cover in place. There are 2 on the top side situated near the wheels and top side of the mower deck. There are 5 more on the underside of the cover. 2 on the left side near the wheel, stradling the axle. Same for the right side. Then there is one more slightly left of the center point. the last two are under the mower deck where the blade is. I was able to undo 7 bolts, prop open the cover and put my belt back on the pulley. If the belt had snapped, I'm sure there would have been more 'undoing' involved.

SOURCE: Self Propelled mower quit self propelling

you probaly have a broken gear or engagment lever. the part the cable goes through before the cable goes thru the deck. you also could have sheared a pin or the plastic gear that drives it.

The self propel system slowly stopped working and now doesn't work at all, what could it be?

Hello,

You didn't specify the make or model of your mower, but generically speaking for self-propelled walk-behind mowers, the drive belt or the front wheel gears can wear out after several years of use. The drive belt could also be loose or off the pulley. The belt and the front wheels can usually be replaced.

You can remove the drive pulley cover and see if the belt is off.

The other components that make up the drive system are the gearbox and the engagement cable. Sometimes the cable can get get out of adjustment or come loose.

My 650 series self propelled is not working. the propell engage cable still has tension but when I grip it to engage it does nothing. It doesn't make any funny sounds or any thing like that. The mower...

I believe your problem to be with belt adjustment. Your engage cable is apparently working because there is tension. Check end of engage cable where it attaches to tighten belt, check to see if belt is broken or close to being broken, or so worn down there is no grip left. You may need to replace belt or just adjust belt. I hope this will ease your up hill struggles.

Craftsman self propelled walk behind lawn mower sef propel handle will not engage..the wheels will turn if you hold the handle down but the handle won't lock in........is something broken in the gear box?

Normally grass and debris are clogged under the belt/transmission cover, preventing the full engagement of the transmission cable/lever.

The cover is located on the topside, left front corner of the mower shell. Clean debris, try it again. If OK, re-install cover, If not, there is a cable adjustment (threaded portion with a nut on either side of a fastening arm) move the cable adjustment towards the rear, this will tighten the cable. Sometimes the cable assembly (includes the cable and the control box) needs to be replaced

The transmission will not engage

If the unit is between1998 & 2004 , the gears in the transmission may be stripped. To tell for sure, remove belt cover, start the unit & engage the drive. If the pulley turns & not the axel, the gears are stripped.

My toro self propelled isn't self propelling

It may just be a matter of adjusting the cable. Sometimes they dont get them adjusted just right from the factory, heres what you do. Locate the plastic shroud in front of the push mower that covers the drive unit.Determine which screwdriver or torx bit is needed to remove shroud and remove it. After removal you will see a pulley with belt around it, as you pull the handle back to engage self propel you should see the pulley move into the belt to put tension on the belt. You can do this with it running to see if enough tension is being put on the belt,if not, locate the cable end where the small bracket holds the cable in place. Loosen the cable bracket and move cable until you have correct tension again, hope this helps.

My Poulan weedeater self propell is not working.

Wanda, there are several things that could be causing your problem.

1) The belt could be worn out, remove the cover and check it
2) The drive cable could be in need of adjustment, engage it with the cover off and the engine not running it should be almost as tight as a fan belt on your car, if not try adjusting the cable
3) The drive gears inside the wheels could be worn out, remove the drive wheels and look at the drive gear teeth, excessive wear is obvious
4) Worst case scenario would be that your transmission is worn out

If all the above check out good, come back and post the model number, I will look it up and see if I can point you to any other possibilities but these are the most likely causes

if the drive cable is pulling back on the transmission and the pulley is turning but the axle isnt turning replace the tranny - no seperate parts available for tranny you must replace the entire unit
