You meant starting is difficult.
Does it crank?
If so check air filter clean it with unleaded petrol.
Take the spark plug out,check the gap and clean it. Place the spark plug against the cylinder head try to start the engine and see if you get a spark.
If you can see a spark inject a very small amount of petrol in the hole where the spark plug you plugged it out.Place it back and retry.
Dirts and debris gets clogged up inside the carborator. If you simply treat your gasoline and clean out the carborator.Don't forget to Clean hose that runs from the gas tank to the carborator too.

post a comment for further assistance.
Thank you for using fixya have a nice day:-)

SOURCE: my mountfield petrol lawnmowers pull cord has gone

I'm going to link you to my two favorite "How-To" videos. Depending on your machine, one of these will show you enough to do it yourself. Once you do one, You'll be a pro. Just make sure you use enough rope and do not wind the spring too tight or you'll break it;

Why wont my mountfield 725m mower go into blade motion

I would check the mower deck itself. This usually happens when it clogs with grass or something got jammed in the belt or pulleys.

Remove the recoil from engine. Once remove try recoil. If it recoils properly then I am afraid that you have internal engine problems. Hopefully its your recoil

More than likely you either have dirty or loose connections at the battery or solenoid, if not there is a 80% chance the solenoid needs replaced. I hope this is helpful.

Cant get my mountfield lawn mower started, it is petrol and i have primed it by pressing the pump button as per the instructions on the mower. there doesnt seem to be any resistance when i pull the start...

make sure there is a spark plug in. that would be 1 reason why there is no resistance when you pull the cord. if there is a spark plug in then check to see if there is a clunking sound when you pull the cord if this is the case then the engine has a broken conecting rod..good luck

I see that is a British machine. I've looked everywhere and it seem they do not have operator's manuals online. Your best bet is call the manufacture in England. It seem they don't have any American distributors. The number is 0-845-600-3207. The 0 is the country code and you'll need to dial it. If you get an operator they can help. I've never called England so good luck.
