I believe that's a BIOS password you are referring to. If the laptop is indeed stolen then this will weed it out.
Call the manufactuer and ask about your problem. They should need certain information to help you, they can help you, sometimes it involves sending it in. HOWEVER, if it's stolen, it will be flagged when it's service tag (BIOS related and unchangable) comes up with someone else's name, address, etc. And authorities will end up being at your door. So, if it's stolen I guess you'll find out :) And if not, well, then your problem will be fixed.
