Question about Heating & Cooling

UACB-030JAS I have a wiring diagram for an air conditioning unit. On the diagram the run capacitors indicate that a "red dot" on the capacitors indicates which corresponding colored wire attaches there. However, the capacitors are rusted (an outside air conditioning unit) and no "red dot" can be seen on either capacitor nor any other indication of polarity. I can make out that the capacitors are rated at 370VAC. That being the case, AC vs. DC, can I not use non-polarized 370VAC capacitors with correct uF for replacement? Thanx.

Hi, if the first 35 uf run cap shorted, you most likely have a shorted to ground compressor. This is what causes them to burn out.A 35uf, x 440 volt run cap is for the compressor only. You should or will have a smaller one for the out door fan.1 lead from the contactor feeds one side of the capacitor, energizes it. The S wire also plugs into that same terminal. Then the R or run wire from the compressor, and C will go to the other side to start it. The 2 left ove have to be commons to feed other componants, you will need to follow them to see, as I can't pull up any diagram for that model. You need to have the compressor ohmed out, or checked to see if it is shorted to ground. To do this, remove the 3 wires to the compressor terminal. Make sure the power is off! If you have a voltage tester that has the audio alert for checking fuses and so on, touch the black lead to a clean spot on the compressor of copper line, and tough each one to each terminal. If you get a beep, it is shored to ground, and you will need to replace your compressor. Do this check and let me know.

Your new fan motor should have a diagram with it or at least printed on the side of the motor, that will help a lot from your end. As for me, I don't know what unit you have, so I will try to help you with just the basics.

Your old motor probably had 3 wires. One went to the contactor, that is the "Line Voltage", one went to the Common terminal on the old capacitor (COM), that's the other "Line Voltage" wire, and the last one went to the "FAN" terminal on the old capacitor. The reason the old capacitor looks different is because it works for both the compressor and the fan motor (split capacitor). You still need this hooked up for the compressor to work.

These vary in brands and wiring so I can not tell you the colors without knowing exactly which motor you have. On the new motor wiring diagram, you should see the "Line Voltage" as described above that 2 of the wires are ran to each other (just on the diagram, not wired together on the unit). This is your power wire that goes to the contactor on the unit, usually black, and your Common wire that runs to the capacitor. You can still run this wire (COM) to the common terminal on the old capacitor since you still have to use the old capacitor for the compressor and the common terminal should still be jumper-ed from the contactor to the (COM) terminal. Then you will probably have 2 wires for the new capacitor, usually Brown and Brown/White. These wires run to each side of the new capacitor and doesn't matter which terminal. Then you will take a new jumper wire from the (COM) terminal on the old capacitor to the terminal on the new capacitor that has your Brown/White lead. Make sure you secure the capacitors inside the unit so not to touch anything surrounding them. Your new motor might also be a "Reversible" motor that has reversing wires also. Again, your new motor diagram can tell you how to hook these up. You have to have it spinning the right way, most of the time it is CCW (counter-clockwise).

What is the fan motor capacitor rating for a RUDD model UACC-030JAS


For a fan motor capacitor we need to know what motor is on it. The units model will not help in this case. On the side of the out door units fan motor will be a sticker/tag with a lot of info. HP, volts,rpm.... And somewhere on that tag should be a "cap 5 uf" 7.5uf....
Most likely a 5 or 7.5. if and 370v or 440v rated. Either one is fine when it comes to the 370/440 value.

Need to change a broken blower motor in RUUD central air unit. Old central air blower motor (GE electric) was connected with brown and orange wire to 15 MHD capacitor. Another orange wire from central air...


on the motor should be a diagram detailing the wires. brown white goes to either side of the capacitor and brown wire to other side of capacitor. hi speed goes to normally open contact on the indoor fan relay and the wire designated common on the motor goes to the other side of power from the relay contacts.

Several types out there. 99% of them use the same basic wiring.
Red is power from transformer to t'stat. Sometime there is a wire for common from transformer to t'stat too, but not always.
While is for heat. Green is for fan. Yellow is for cooling.
These 4 to 5 wires go on the terminals that are maked with letters: C=common, RH/RC is for power, W=heat, Y=cooling, G=fan.

In most cases, 2 wires from the indoor unit will go to the outdoor unit to power it for cooling. Usually connected to the yellow wired, Y terminal and common or grounded to the unit if the transformer is done in the same fashion.

If you have a heat pump, totally different animal and different wiring too.

the wire diagram should tell you how. it all depends where wires lead to. be very carefull, capacitors can be dangerous. brown usaully go to fan black usaully goes to common red usaully goes to herm or compressor. it all depends where wires come from

Purple should be on "C".
The fan motor may be destroyed now. Switch the wire and see if it keeps running or not.

How to wire a capacitor to a condencing unit


I can help you:
1: Put a Piece of Tape on each wire. write #1 #2 #3 etc
2: do the same on the capacitor.
3: Remove Wires with insulated needle nose pliers, and take a Insulated Screwdriver and Cross it over the Terminals on the Capacitor. Its safe, it just Discharges it.
4 Remove and go to lowes or home depot and get a new one.


5:Note the "RED" dot on the old Capacitor.make sure that you hook the same wire on the new cap.

6: Install New Capacitor and, your ready to go.

Make sure you pull out the "Service Disconnect" Breaker Located on the Wall next to the condensing Unit Before you do any work. Replace when you are done..

Help on my ac unit


no special tricks alyson.....prolly just a breaker or fuse.check the main panel for a turned off breaker and at the unit there's a disconnect box that may have a bad fuse.
