When printing, there is a vertical strip of smudged ink. It is not extra dark, it is just smeared and lighter, and it is always in the same place.Everything else on the page prints clearly and sharply, so I don't think it is out of ink. Suggestions?
Now you're talking about a canon inkjet printer.... yah, you can rinse the printhead off in your sink if you want... first comment is on a canon (ARE YOU READY FOLKS) LASERJET printer.... big difference,.
SOURCE: smeared lines
Okay, this was the problem I posted a few days ago. It's fixed now, so in case you have the same problem with smearing, here's what the help desk from Canon suggested: Open the cover and remove the ink cartridges. There is a gray lever in front of the cartridges. Lift this lever and the printhead can be easily removed.
Our printhead had a buildup of black ink on the surface. I carefully removed this with rubbing alcohol. I let the printhead dry and replaced everything. No more smearing. Imagine a help-desk that actually helped!

take out your toner and wipe the imaging drum off with a chamois or such. even a paper towell will work. turn the drum with the gear as you wipe it. likely you will find a spot on the drum that has something on it. get it off without damaging the surface of the drum. your fingernail is a better tool than a scraper on this.... try the cloth or chamois first.
reinstall your toners and off you go..
Dont do this under bright light......
oh, toner, not ink in a laserjet
