That could be a number of things. So, I would start with the easiest first. You will want to isolate the sound/knock, it may be an exhaust issue/leak/broken manifold bolt, at the exhaust manifold(s) If you check engine light is on, you will want to have a diagnostic ran, which you can perform at just about any auto parts store for free. If the light is on, you may be looking at a faulty knock sensor, and that would be the easiest to fix. If the knock sensor is not the issue, then you may be looking at something a lot more serious, like a weak oil pump, worn out camshaft, bad lifter, or even bad valves.
I hope that you have found this information useful, and if I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using fixya! Good luck!

I have a lower end engine knock on my 2009 Chrysler Sebring, what should my fears/concerns be?

Rod/main bearings are bad. This is an engine rebuild or replace. You could throw an additive in it and drive it till it dies. I have seen engines last two weeks and up to 2 or 3 years, with rod knock. The ones that last a long time usually throw a piston rod out the side of the block.

Engine knock

The knocking on acceleration, and the oil consumption indicate you probably have a failed big-end or conrod bearing in the engine. The classic test is to run the engine at a moderate idle and pull the plug leads off then replace them, in turn. If one shows a marked decrease in the knocking noise, that cylinder likely has a failed conrod bearing.

Positive diagnosis can be made by placing the car on a hoist and removing the sump. The suspect bearing cap is then removed. If the crankshaft bearing surface is not damaged, repair is easier, but mostly it will be scored, and then the engine has to come out.

I hope it is not this, but if so, it may be cheaper to just fit a reconditioned "short" motor.

Sebring 2004 engine knocking

Well it could be something in the timing components but I doubt it.
Chances are its a connecting rod or piston.

2002 2.7 liter chrysler has a knock in the engine. sounds like it is coming from the valves

if the car has alot of miles on it , a little bit of top engine noise is nothing to worry about. if the car does'nt have alot of miles on it or the noise is real loud then you may have a lose valve or need rocker arm ajustment.

Possible oil Leak at Knock Sensor

if I'm not mistaken, the knock sensor is mounted on the transmission bell close to the motor and detects the flywheel position. It is possible that the valve cover gaskets might be leaking from the bottom side and dripping onto the knock sensor, but it is also possible that the leak might be from the rear main seal of the motor. If that is the case, you will have to drop the ****** to replace the seal. If the knock sensor was bad your vehicle would not start at all, just crank. Try to wipe all the old oil with rags and look very closely where it gets oily again

2000 sebring engine ticking/knocking when hot. When you put in neutral or park it quiets down.

Check the torque converter to the flywheel ,make sure the bolts are tight, and if so,it still could be the flywheel,if not the engine has a rod knocking.

Engine knocking and oil lampe illuminated during idle

Change oil and filter. Use a synthetic blend oil, add 1/2 pint of marvel mystery oil, and drive for a short time, 30 minutes or so. If knock continues, the damage is already happened. Use only synthetic blend or synthetic oil in the 2.7 litre engine.

Knock sensor

The knock sensor threads into the side of the cylinder block.
  1. Disconnect electrical connector from knock sensor.
  2. Use a crow foot socket to remove the knock sensors.
The knock sensor threads into the side of the cylinder block in front of the starter.

  1. Install knock sensor. Tighten knock sensor to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.) torque. Over or under tightening effects knock sensor performance, possibly causing improper spark control.
  2. Attach electrical connector to knock sensor
