SOURCE: Canon IP 90 clogged printhead nozzles. How to remove printhead?

Hi there,

To avoid drying of the Print Head and clogging of the nozzles, note the following.
*When you turn off the Machine
Follow the procedure below to turn off the machine.
1)Press the ON/OFF button to turn off the machine,
2) Confirm that the POWER lamp has gone out.
This takes a few seconds or as long as 20 seconds.
3) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
If you are using a power outlet strip, you can switch off instead.
When you press the ON/OFF button to turn off the machine, the machine automatically puts a protective cap on the Print Head to prevent the ink from drying. If you remove the power cord or switch off the power outlet strip before the POWER lamp goes out, this capping will not be done properly, causing the Print Head to dry and clog.

* When You are not Using the Machine for a Long Time.
When you are not using the machine for a long time, print or copy in both black and white and in color or pertorm Print Head Cleaning, about once a month to prevent degradation of the Print Head.
Numerous nozzles are installed in the Print Head for high -precision printing. Just as the uncapped tip of a ballpoint pen or marker becomes dry and unusable if it is not used for a long period of time, the print nozzles becomes blocked by dried ink. Periodically printing or cleaning of the Print Head can prevent this blockage.
Note :
*If the printed area is traced with a highlight pen or paint-stick or stained with water or sweat, ink may blur depending in the paper.
*If the print head nozzles get clogged , printouts will become faint or particular colors will not be printed properly.

When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are Incorrect.
When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect even if the ink remains in the ink tanks, the print head nozzles are probably clogged. Print the nozzle check pattern to confirm the condition of the nozzles and then perform the Print Head Cleaning.
Note : Before performing maintenace

*Open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and make sure that all lamps for the ink tanks are lit red.
-If any one of the lamps is flashing slowly, the associated ink tank is running low. You can continue printing for a while, but we recommend you to have replacement ink tank available.
-If any one of the lamps is flashing fast, the associated ink tank is emty. Replace the ink tank.
If an ink tank is flashing fast even though ink remains in that ink tank, it is inserted into the wrong position. Make sure that the ink tank of the correct coloris inserted in each position matching the label.
-If the ink lamp is not lit, the tank is not set properly. Press the <PUSH> mark on the ink tank until the tank clicks into place. Make sure that all the packaging material is peeled off the ink tank.

*Increase the print quality setting in the printer settings.

Step 1 : Printing the Nozzle Check Printer.
1) Make sure that the machine is turned on, open the Front Feed and extend the Output Paper support.
2)Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or the Front Feeder.
Set the Paper Thickness Lever to the left.
3) Press the Paper Feed Switch to select the paper source where you have loaded paper.
4)Print the nozzle check pattern.
a) Press the Menu button.
b) Use the right and left arrow buttons to select the Maintenance/settings, then press the OK button.
The maintenance /setting screen is displayed.
3) Use the right and left arrow buttons to select Maintenance, then press the OK button.
The Maintenance screen is displayed.

The pattern confirmation screen is displayed.
5) Use the Up and Down arrow buttons to select Yes and the press the OK button.

Examine the pattern and take the appropriate action.

Step 2: Print Head Cleaning
Clean the Print Head if lines are missing or if white streaks appear in the printed nozzle check pattern. Cleaning unclogs the nozzles and restores the print head condition. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used inl to be absorbed in the ink absorber. Cleaning the Print Head consumes ink, so perform Print Head Cleaning only when necessary.

The nozzle check print is printed, and the pattern confirmation screens are displayed alternately.
Examine the pattern and take the appropriate action.
Note : If the problem is not resolved after performing steps 4 and 5 twice, try Print Head Deep Cleaning.

Print Head Deep Cleaning.
If print quality does not improve by standard Print head Cleaning, try the Print Head Deep Cleaning, which is more powerful process. Note that cleaning the Print Head causes used ink to be absorbed in the ink absorber. Print Head deep Cleaning consumer more ink than the standard Print Head Cleaning, so perform this procedure only when neccessary.
1)
1) Make sure that the machine is on, open the Fron Feeder, and extend the Output Paper Support.
2) Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder or the Front Feeder/

The Maintenance screen is displayed.
d) Use the Up and Down arrow buttons to select Deep Cleaning and then press the OK button.
The confirmation screen is displayed.
e) Use the Up and Down arrow buttons to select Yes and the press the OK button.
Print Head Deep Cleaning starts.
Do not perform any other operations until Print Head Deep cleaning finishes. This takes about 100 seconds.

5) Check the condition of the Print Head.
a) Print the nozzle check pattern to check the print head condition.
If a particular color is not printed properly, replace the ink tank of that color.
b) If the print head nozzles are still not cleaned, turn off the machine and perform another Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours.
c) If this does not solve the problem, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact your Canon service representative.

Hope this helps.
Please rate my response.
Thanks.
Have a good day.

PLS CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT PRINTHEAD THE CANON PIXMA IP4940 TAKES

I think it is Canon QY6-0080, but check that with the supplier, who should have a list. They are about $90-$110 each, so you may want to just get a new printer.

Why does my canon mg5250 not copy black and white

Go to the setup, then maintenance menu on the printer and select "print nozzle check pattern"
You should see a complete black ladder pattern (for the fat black cartridge) and a set of coloured bars for each colour cartridge (including the thin black cartridge). If the black ladder pattern is missing then this indicates the black printhead is blocked or cartridge is empty. If you are SURE the cartridge is not dry, then:
select clean to clean the print head for the black only. You may have to do this several times. If the check pattern does not improve, you may have to remove the printhead and clean it manually. Instructions to do this I will give separately if needed.

My prints have white horizontal lines, i don't have a manual

You may end up replacing the printhead as well; this, as with most inkjets, don't tolerate longer stand times without printing, the ink solidifies in the tiny jets and 'cleaning' doesn't help.
If you are adventurous and have too little to do, you can try cleaning the printhead using the detailed instructions found here:
Canon Printhead Rescue
I tried it, without success, gaining only little improvement in print quality and after buying two heads purportedly for my 4000 and getting 'Wrong printhead' emssages with both, I did my own research and found that the printheads first bought were in fact NOT for the 4000. I even tried an ultrasonic bath of some power without success. Ordering the right printhead (QY6-0049-00) which I found new on eBay solved the problem.

Ink blockage in Canon MP 600 printer

Given that you may spend a considerably amount of time and money trying new cartridges, etc... it's probably best to invest in a new printhead (these are easily replaceable and considered consumables by Canon).

In the USA, purchasing from Canon directly is very cheap but elsewhere, like the UK it's prohibitively expensive so you may be better purchasing a refurbished iP4300 from the Canon Outlet dealer on ebay. This gets you a set of cartridges and compatible printhead for a lot less than just a printhead.

Take it out and clean all contacts, worth a try as they cost £500 from canon. An engineer told me they usually only last about a year and after problems with the cutter failing and colour problems in drawings we got a new one which fixed the problems. Third new printhead in 4 years, canon should be ashamed.

I860 won't print properly

Buying a new printhead is a mighty good suggestion, it seems you have pretty well used up the maximum service life of your printhead, if i'm not mistaken. Try to reinstall your printer along with its software. Go to settings>control panel > remove hardware> then, reboot. After, rebooting, re-install your printer software and drivers.

lean The Print Head Nozzles (Windows) The following contains instructions to check the nozzles for poor print quality and perform cleanings of the print head nozzles as necessary. If print results are faint or streaks are printed, the print head nozzles may be clogged. Those phenomena can be improved by performing print head cleanings or print head deep cleanings. nozzlecheckflow_en.jpg
