Question about Powerware 9120 UPS System

1 Answer

Can I replace the fan in a live powerware 9120?

The fan in my production powerware 9120 has died, resulting in an over temp alarm. While in this alarm state it apparently is not functioning as a UPS, as I discovered when we lost power last week. The problem is I can't shut this UPS down - it'll bring our whole corporate network down. I've found the directions to replace the fan, I'm wondering if it's possible and safe to do while the system is live.

I want to add I did contact Eaton for an estimate to have a tech come and replace it, and their estimate is almost $2000! for a $10 fan...

I actually found a number of posts indicating any cheap 2-load 12VDC 80mm X 80mm X 25mm will replace it, with instructions how. No help telling me to replace the bearings without more detail on how. Can you even replace bearings on brushless DC motor?
My question still stands: Is this safe to do while the UPS is turned on? It's in "OVER TEMP" warning already.

According to Eaton tech support, this is a part that I can replace myself easily, but the UPS does need to be powered down.

As you said any fan 80X80mm will do. Have in mind that this is live curcuit with high voltages.

Prepare the fan before installing it. Normally you buy the fan without the connector so a good idea is to add the connector before removing the ups cover. Another way is to use heat shrinking tube to join the wires comming from the board. Personally i prefer to desolder the cables from the failed fan and solder the directly to the new fan. As i said before its a live curcuit and you need to be carefull.

Hey dude your problem is so simple..below are my solutions.
if you already secured the fans for the replacement then its easy for you to do it, try to totally shut down your UPS removing the input and battery supply. avoid replacing the fans with power, its to dangerous. it consist of almost 400VDC inside in it.

Not sure what you mean by load the batteries. Replace them? Yes. Bypass mode is typically used when servicing the unit. You can email Eaton if you like:

Powerware 9120 6000i model indicates a charger failure. It is the first time that we opened this unit and we do not know the location of the charger circuit (we do not have a schematic diag). Could you...

The charger in powerware 9 series 9120 6000i ,the fan is of a quality that it fails and the heat sink does not get sufficient cooling ,it runs on 12 volt ,i replaced it with a cpu fan from a mainboard on a pc and it works perfectly now. make sure that the fan is running else the charger might go in protection or can fail due to the transistor on heat sink fails.

1st, the 9120 is a 700, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000 or 6000 Va
if it is a 6000 Va that voltage sounds ok, and the ups as no problem, each battery will be around 12,75 Volts, it will be higher and the charging circle ends.
