My wife overcooked a potato to a crisp in the microwave. The microwave doesnt work at all anymore. No life. Breaker good. But my smoke alarms do. Any answers

Without the full model number, I can only give a general answer.

I would suspect that the overheating damaged the thermostat / thermal cutout that protects the magnetron. Hopefully it did its job.

This most often occurs when the microwave is left to run unattended, a big no-no as mentioned in the owner's manual.

I have a GE Microwave Oven/Dual Element Browner Model # JES1288SHO3. The inside cabinet is arching through the wave guide panel. DAVE IN LA.

Hi Dave in LA,

The wave gude cover is replaceable, the part number is1085082. The reason for arcing through is typically a splatter of food stuck to the cover and then the heating waves overcooked or burned it. Carefully replace the cover (panel), look for any burned spots behind the cover, if the wave guide is burned through, the Microwave is unrepairable. If the waveguide has small arc spots you can carefully clean (sandpaper) and use touchup paint to recoat. I hope this helps and if it does, please let us know!

No heat micro keeps cycling through all programsdemo in cook/bx

My GE doesn't have a Demo mode but say we have a power failure. It won't let me use it until I set the clock.

Try that and see if it helps

Did I blow it up????

After washing you need to poke holes in potatoe skins or the steam can cause them to explode. Cook potatoes no longer than 6 to 8 minutes depending on your units power.

Microwave ovens can be very dangerous if damaged, so you will be safer to replace the unit. Better safe than sorry. Service on microwave ovens is not cost effective, and the newer ovens are very reasonable.

Overcooked potato overcooked the microwave

The magnetron probably overheated, blowing the thermal cutout / thermal fuse / thermostat mounted on it.

Cleaning the door insides

The door should come apart with a little prying. Be careful because the plastic can break fairly easy. You can look at this description to see what pieces are involved. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=503590
