OOPS! I hate to tell you but you most likely put new blades on that were too short. Check your manual and get the proper length blades. If you still have the old ones, check them against the new ones and you will see that they are shorter resulting in the uncut grass in the center.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42 inch deck mower.

That model number des not show up as a good number on the site. Are you sure you have the belts on correctly? If it has 2 belts on the deck & 1 is not installed correctly they work against each other. Safely make sure that each blade will turn by hand. did you take the blades off? If they are too long by just a fraction, they will hit ach other, but that usually makes quiet a noise. Get your book out & systematically go over everything you touched or changed. It sounds like something really simple you have overlooked. you can go to & enter a good model number & view all of the parts diagrams. Sometimes they are a big help, & at other times they just confuse you more:). Let me know what you find!!

Judging by the diagram the spring mounts under the armbrake, the Bolt (#52) goes through the circular spring. One end of the spring goes into one of the holes near the bolt on the armbrake and the other ( after providing tension by turning the spring ) must attach to a non moving part on the deck to be able to provide the required tension Look for a small turned up piece of metal with a notch in it on the housing.
Hope this helps

Bled on cutting deck spins free and will not cut grass

Hi there,
I assume you mean the blade on cutting deck?
Is the pulley that drives it still firmly connected to it? (I mean the pulley and the blade spin together as one, and not independently)
If the blade is loose on its spindle check under the deck for damage, and that the blade securing bolt(s) are intact and tight.
If the problem is that the pulley isn't getting driven by the deck belt, that is a different story. Most likely the deck belt isn't getting enough tension to grip the pulley. Check the tensioner is working properly and the spring is still hooked up and working.

How spring goes on deflector shield

Please wear eye protection for your safety before performing this task since there is a spring that is under load! Take a pair of side cutters and cut the one way lock washer located on the font side of the shaft. (Facing Towards Front of Tractor). It should be black in color. Take a pair of pliers or vise-grips and pull and twist the rear part of the shaft that goes through the plastic deflector and work the plastic deflector up and down while you work the shaft out. As you're working the deflector shaft out, take caution as the spring will pop out of place. To install new deflector, place spring between plastic deflector and align it up to the hinge openings on the deck. Make sure the "L" tab is inserted in the open slot of the plastic deflector. Tilt the plastic deflector towards the back side and start to insert the deflector shaft from the back and wedge it in about close to half way in. Take the front part of the spring that has the rubber tab (to protect deck paint) and twist it counter clockwise so the rubber tab is pointing towards the left side of the deck. Push down on the plastic deflector assembly and continue to work the deflector shaft all the way through to the font hinge opening. Once the shaft has passed all the way through the hinge opening, take a 9mm or 10mm deep well quarter inch socket and tap the new one way lock washer that can be purchased at your local hardware or Home Depot location. Use a soft mallet hammer to do this so you won't damage the chrome finish on the socket. Good Luck and Let Me Know How it Turns Out.

Craftsman Lawn Tractor runs but does not cut grass?

Above deck, below tractor is black cable which has spring on end and goes to a tensioner pulley.
This cable should be locked into a bracket with a retainer pin and then its spring tip (rounded) goes around the top of tensioner pulley axle then a small washer on top and then retainer pin goes through this tensioner pulley axel shaft tip to hold spring onto it.

Troy-bilt riding mower won't move in forward or reverse

I had a similar problem with my TroyBilt 50 inch zero turn mower. Was cutting grass when it stopped going either forward or backward even though it would start and the PTO would move the cutting blades. Turned out the tensioner spring for the belt that drives the motors near the rear wheels had gone missing. Searched the yard where I had cut and moved the machine but couldn't find it. A new one cost me about $7.50. Put the new one on and it worked fine.

How do I install the grass collector

Assuming that you have the correct grass catcher..... Install the discharge deflector at the deck discharge. This is the smaller piece that bends 90 degrees. It will slide into clips on the deck when you have the deck's plastic deflector raised up. Next, install the bagging assembly. It's pretty straightforward. Lastly, install the plastic chute (tube). Push it in the grass catcher (bagger) opening, and then pivot it over the deflector and down onto it to seat it. Connect the straps.
