Question about Samsung HL50A650 50 in. TV

Open Question

Unit will attempt to turn on and quit

Lights for a bad bulb do not flash in the past when I have had a burned out bulb. I replaced the bulb less than 3 months ago. When the tv is plugged in it will attempt to turn on, the ballast light is there, the light bulb will begin to light up and the screen will show beginning signs that it is warming up and will turn on, on occasion it will fully illuminate for a few seconds and then shut off. After the "initial" start up, it will shut off and try over and over to restart, the bulb seems to always start to light up and then die. The tv does not "give up" and flash the bad bulb lights, it just tries to start over and over.

I removed the rear cover and the power supply board. None of the capacitors appear to be of concern. -bulging. I removed the ballast and fan. The ballast fan smells cooked, but the ballast fan does not and appears okay. Could a fan be the cause? The TV attempts to turn on but shuts off if the fan isnt working?

SOURCE: no standy lights illuminating..happened before

Sounds like a power supply issue to me. Did you check the 1.5A fuse and see if its still intact? Check it with a multimeter and measure the resistance. If it reads a very high value then its probably blown. The fuse is located on the power board(the board where your power cord plugs into the tv). Also look for any visible damage like a swollen/cracked or leaky capacitors. The top of the capacitors should be flat, if its swollen or cracked, you will know its bad.

Let me know your observations,
Sai.

SOURCE: I have HL-P5085 SAMSUNG TV that illustrates the

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV.

Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired of course) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companies Philips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failed in 2-5 years instead of 10-20. The capacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in all sorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems.

Here are some options for you.

1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is it under warranty?)

2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cord plugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad caps replace the entire board. The entire board costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found at tv-part.com but supplies are limited. I would definitely shop around though.

3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill.

Caps are inexpensive and if you can take care of it yourself it will save you hundreds.

I have a tip/tutorial on this site that may also help. It gives step by step instructions for replacing caps on PSB #715t2432-2. If this is your board you are in luck. It's called: Fixing the Philips Turns/shuts off on its own problem. I'm working on uploading pictures to help guide people though the process as well. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Hope this helps and Good luck.

SOURCE: 3-yr old Samsung HL-S46765;symptoms indicated lamp

Hi doocroo,
If you have same replacement bulb but yet the tv didn't power up and still shuts off, this is an indication that there was a faulty parts in the ballast board. If this board has no high voltage output feeding the bulb, same symptom will be encountered. Check this board first for bad solder joints(crack/dried/cold solder), you must work in the brightest area because this is hard to spot. Check for faulty high voltage ballast transformer, driver transistor, open resistors and leaky/dried filter elecltroltytic capacitor.
You must know how to test the said parts and know safety precaution handling it if you are going to DIY. If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments and can't troubleshoot the board yourself, I would advice you to find an experienced technician to do the job for you.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

SOURCE: How to tell if ballast is bad on samsung dlp tv

It is a common practice that the ballast to repalce along with new bulb. There is no way to check the internal winding short of ballast. Repalce both at the same time. If ballast has any damage, it will surely ruin the bulb too.

Right turn signal lights flash very fast

check to see if the front or rear bulb is burned out most of the time one bulb burns out causing a faster flash on that side.

Grand prix front turn signals lights will not work but rears flash rapidly.

Definitely not the flasher, as long as it is flashing or blinking somewhere. Rapid flashing indicates a burned bulb, but since you already tried new bulbs in front, possibly bad bulb sockets, loose connectors, or a bad ground for the front bulbs. If you have a test light or voltmeter (multimeter), check for power at the socket when turns are on. If power then at the front, try new bulbs or trace the ground for those lights. If no power to the socket for turn signals, recheck wiring.

2000 taurus left turn signal flashes rapidly and the left rear turn signal lamp does not work. Does ford have burned out bulb sense circuit that would give this indication? The right side flashes normally.

Yes - the fast flashing is a warning that a bulb is burned out. Change the bulb (be careful to put it in the same as the old one as it probably is 2 bulbs in one , parking and turn/stop) and you should be fine.

Unit is connected but wont turn on lights, socket is live and has power

Power packs don't have repair parts.
Check that bulbs are not all burned out ... if a few bulbs burn out, then power pack can burn out the rest and power pack also damaged.
People have written fixya reporting they took apart power pack, but nobody reports fixing a power pack once it has gone bad.

"Harry" wrote with a work-around if you can get manual override to turn on lights.
He bought cheap plug-in timer and plugged power pack into cheap timer.
Harry also said his power pack has 5 year warranty, and he was negotiating with Malibulights.com.

Best I found are tips for next power pack that might save money:
The reason I add tips now, is some fella wrote fixya.
He bought 500 Watt power pack to replace 300 Watt > thinking bigger was better.
Power pack burned out. Here's why:
a) Match wattage of bulbs with wattage of power pack
Lets say you have fifteen 20 watt bulbs = 300 watts, so install 300Watt power pack
b) Installing a 500W power pack on 300W of bulbs will burn out bulbs and power pack.
c) Replace bulbs as soon as they burn out or other bulbs will burn out and power pack will burn out.
d) When working on bulbs, unplug power pack or power pack may burn out.

Use manual override and see if lights work correctly.
Check that bulbs are each working. If one bulb is burned out, then others will burn out, and the load change can cause power pack to stop functioning.
Always unplug power pack when working on lights.

Power packs do not have repair parts anywhere on the internet that I know.
I checked Intermatic, Malibulights, ebay, amazon, and listened to fixya customers.
Occasionally folks take power pack apart, but nobody reports being able to repair the transformer or timer.

Once power pack goes bad, then it needs to be replaced. Bad news because they're expensive.

'Harry' wrote to fixya with some information.
His timer stopped working so he bought cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override, and then plugged power pack into cheap timer.
Harry also said his power pack has 5 year warranty and he was negotiating with Malibulights.com for replacement. No word how that came out.

I cannot get the overhead light to come on when I walk past the sensors. It used to come on. The bulb is not burned out. Also the indicator light on the opener keeps flashing.

To have your lights come on automatically when you walk into an open garage, you must START with the lights ON. If you don't want that feature and you want to turn it off, you must START with the lights OFF.

To turn the feature on, turn the lights on manually with the wall switch, then press and hold the LIGHT button for about 10 seconds until the motor unit light bulbs flash. Now, if the light bulbs are on, manually turn them out and then walk out through the open door. The light bulbs should come on.

To disable this feature, start with the light bulbs OFF and everything else is the same.
