Stuck in USB Mass Storage mode

On interface setup screen. USB Mass Storgae is highlighted (and unit works fine in this mode). Cannot switch to Garmin Data Format therefore cannot connect to Mapsource etc. Buttons are all good. Can hear beep when I try to select another mode but USB Mass Storage remains highlighted. Have done a factory reset but problem remains.

SOURCE: Garmin Etrex vista will not

HI,

Since the problem is the PC not recognizing the device. Please try out these steps:

Try connecting your device to another USB port. Using one port all the time to connect and disconnect USB items a port can develop a range of files associated with configuring the USB connection. Some of these files might actually have been from your device connected before, or some of these configurations could be from other USB items you connect to this port. Changing ports can often lead to an immediate good connection simply because ther are no conflicting configuration files. If this does not solve your problem, we can now entertain the next process to try.
coolguy008: THIS IS A BIG ONE. This is the last thing to do. Before you try this process, please complete a full back up of your system. This is important as the next step can have side effects you did not entirely expect. AND Second, you might need your Vi Install Disk (not in all cases). What this process is about is renewing all hardware/software configurations relating to USB connections.

Here is what you do:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects

THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB device

If these suggestions are implemented and you are still have connection difficulties with your computer, there are several other things to try. If you have another XP Computer you should try connecting your device to another computer to see if the problem is a device problem or not. If it still has this problem with the next computer, it maybe be a fault of the device.

IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL the above mentioned and still have a problem, you should next contact the seller of this machine for further instructions of what to do next.

Goodluck..

Computer doesn't recognize garmin

Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin unit. If your computer does not detect your Garmin unit, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Turn the unit off and then back on again.
Plug the USB cable into your computer.
The unit either automatically goes into USB Mass Storage Mode or displays USB Mass Storage Mode as an option on the screen.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

If you still experience problems, please contact Product Support.

Garmin nuvi 40 goes into usb mass storage mode when pluged to charge

I updated my Nuvi 40 with the latest software and it will not reboot into GPS mode with the usb cable connected. It used to work. I have figured out how to get it to charge with a standard USB cable:
1) Power it on.2) Press the battery icon for 8 seconds - it will enter TEST mode.3) Plug in your USB cable from the PC to the Nuvi - the screen will change to say charging.4) Press the power button 3 times rapidly - it will say Charging across the screen and it will go dim and then dark.5) To wake it up and use GPS mode while charging simply press the power button 3 times rapidly, again.
Works Great!

My garmin 530hcx has locked up on the opening screen...is there a master reset sequence? I have removed the batteries and still won't work! Also, it won't shut off once turned on and locked...

f a device is locking up and has a long noise or beep when powering down, this is due to hidden data being transferred to the microSD data card. These hidden files and folders are being created by the computer and sent to the data card in addition to the maps, waypoints, routes, tracks and pictures that were selected. The following GPS units could experience this issue.
  • eTrex Legend Cx
  • eTrex Legend HCx
  • eTrex Venture Cx
  • eTrex Vista Cx
  • eTrex Vista HCx
  • GPSMAP 60Cx
  • GPSMAP 60CSx
  • GPSMAP 76Cx
  • GPSMAP 76CSx
  • Rino 520HCx
  • Rino 530HCx
To prevent this issue when the device is shutting down delete these extra unused or hidden files and folders from the data card. Examples of these folders are: .Trashes and .Spotlight-V100 folders. Since the Mac OS adds hidden files and folders to mounted removable drive volumes this process cannot be done on a Mac and will need to be done after every time the data card is mounted as a volume on a Mac.
To delete these folders the device will have to be placed into USB Mass Storage mode. To do this:
  1. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
  2. Go to the Main Menu
  3. Select Setup
  4. Select Interface
  5. Select USB Mass Storage Mode
The device is now in USB Mass Storage Mode. At this time a window should open on the computer desktop displaying Removable Disk at the top. The Garmin folder will be displayed. Open the Garmin folder.
Do NOT delete the the following files:
  • gmapsupp.img
  • gmapsupp.unl
  • gmapsupp.gma
These files contain supplemental mapping. If delete will cause the mapping to be erased or unviewable.
If there are other folders or files on the data card, delete these. Some of these files or folders may be hidden and therefore will need to be unhidden*. Once you have done so, please disconnect the device from the computer and power it up.
*Note: To Display a file folder that is hidden:
  1. Select the Tools option on the window that appears on the computer when the device is in USB Mass Storage Mode
  2. Select Folder Options
  3. Select View
  4. Open the Files and Folders folder
  5. Open the Hidden Files and Folders folder
  6. Select Show hidden files and folder
  7. Select Apply
  8. Select OK
Once all of the hidden files and folders have been removed from the microSD Card the unit will not

My Garmin Nuvi 250 w gets stuck on the screen showing a picture connecting a computer to Garmin. I have it in my car and resetting hasn't worked. any suggestions

Hello,

The nuvi is being put into mass storage mode (the mode used to transfer data back and forth to a computer). This is usually caused by using the wrong vehicle power cable.
The correct cable is Garmin part number 010-10723-06.

Whenever I turn on my Nuvi 200 it shows the mass storage mode icon and will not display maps. How do I get rid of this problem?

With a Nuvi, If a Garmin or Garmin compatible power cord is not used, GPS will stay on the USB Mass Storage mode and will not go to Map Screen even though connector fits fine. In this case GPS can slowly charge. So, you need to find/obtain a power supply that works right.

My camera takes pictures great and charges but will not be recognized by my computer. yet all my other cameras have. even the previous one just before this. i'm very frustrated at this point!

Your camera has two USB modes, "Picture Transfer Protocol" and "Mass Storage". These days, Mass Storage is more common, and the problem could easily be that your camera is stuck in PTP mode. Can you go to Setup - Interface - USB mode and change it from PTP to Mass Storage and see if that helps?

When it displays insert memory card for connecting as mass storage device, switch off the phone and reconnect so the phone will perform as a memory storage device.

Trouble connecting to any computer

Hmmm..

Make sure your using a USB cable, specifically a USB cable with a mini connector on the end. Specifically, a USB cable with the second one from the left in this picture:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:USB_types_2.jpg

If you are using the USB port, you should have no need for setting COM ports.

Another technique you can use (which I just figured out today) was to place the Garmin Unit in "USB Mass Storage Mode". This allows you to offload saved tracks, but I don't think you can download waypoints or other things that the WayPoint Manager allows.

You can access this option via the Garmin Unit

Goto: "Main Menu" -> "Setup" -> "Interface". Press Down to get to the button "USB Mass Storage". Plug in that USB Mini cord, and you have a thumb drive!

Good Luck!
