Open Question

Black, mold-like, iron-filing looking, stuff grew on stainless steel in tub filled w/ water and bleach.

I had added about a cup of bleach to a few inches of water in the tub to kill athlete's foot fungus (if any). Water was clear. Left the tub to soak overnight. Next morning, black stuff that looked like lacy iron filings or leafy mold was sitting on the tub drain knob which is either stainless or chrome (the flat part of the drain underneath, the rim, says "stainless" on it, but the knob may be chrome. The knob was under the water. Creepy stuff. Some of the gunk had floated and stuck to the sides of the tub and spray hose, the end of which was in the water as well. I've soaked the tub many times before; first time this has happened. I picked up some of the stuff, and it smeared, which seems to me to rule out iron filings. I read other forums which indicate that black spots on the tub could be corroded rubber from the pipes to the hot water heater, however, this was standing water that had no black stuff when I first filled it. It seems to be either corrosion or some sort of mold, though I can't imagine what sort of mold grows in water with bleach in it! If anyone has any ideas, I'm interested.

I got an email saying that I should add more information if I haven't received an answer, but there really is no more information to add. What has occurred to me is that there might be a rubber washer somewhere under the drain pull knob and that this time it finally corroded? Because based on the behavior of the stuff, it sounds like it might have been rubber. But it is just strange how it stood up creepily on the know, like some weird growth... Anyone know why it might have done that if it was in fact corroded rubber?

SOURCE: black spots on white laundry

is the washer noisey when spinning? If so its probable that the main bearings are worn, & losing the original grease into the wash tub. At 10-14 yrs old its probably not woth fixing (assuming parts are still available)

SOURCE: Mold & Smelly in Washer

I am posting this again!

What is the mater with us that we are accepting this outrageous product flaw?

Let's put the blame exactly where it belongs and keep it there until manufacturers clean up their act!

What in the world are we thinking when we allow ourselves to be forced to jump through these ridiculous hoops just do do laundry!?

I am furious and it is over something as stupid as a washing machine! A WASHING MACHINE!!!!

New government regulations for new water efficiency washing machines has my family’s clothing smelling like a stinking, rancid, moldy basement! This is absolutely absurd! I have been told to change laundry detergent, run hot bleach water through my washer and, get this; my washing machine is 1 year old and my clothes smell filthy!!! The mold and mildew from these nasty machines have wreaked havoc through skin rashes and allergies in my children!

I paid $1,000.000 for this da*ned washing machine and THIS is what is being sold to the public under the disguise of efficiency!!?? I have been on the phone about this problem. I have, over the past 3 months, with a technician on the phone, been instructed to do the following:

*Make sure I use high efficiency detergent THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong.
*Cleaned the lint trap (..that is stupidly behind a metal access plate that you have to use a screwdriver to remove screws to get to it EVERY TIME) and THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong!
*Cleaned the water hoses; THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong!
*Cleaned the gasket around the door. THAT will fix my problem
Wrong!
*Cleaned the tub with bleach water. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG!
*REMOVED the hoses and cleaned the pump. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG AGAIN!
*Take the pump out entirely and clean all inlet, outlets and hoses. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!!

NONE of this fixed my problem of filthy, wet, stinking, rancid clothing that has endangered my family's health! I even washed my children's clothing out by hand in the bathtub and put them in the washer just to rinse and spin and they STILL smelled horrific.

Finally, at the end of my rope, I returned to the appliance store from which I purchased this machine and they have told me that they cannot accept a return. They will not accept a return and I have to deal directly with GE. I HAVE dealt with GE up until the final straw when I they told me I needed a new pump, but so sorry, your warranty JUST expired 3 days ago!!!

Furthermore, my pump was fine. I did NOT need a new pump and have now been told that I cannot return the new, unused pump that cost me another $183.00. I have now been told that this is a problem with ALL front loading washing machines and I should do the following:

*First, run a full complete wash cycle on hottest setting containing Bleach – * Note: wash cycle takes 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, run a full wash cycle on hottest setting using high efficiency laundry detergent for another 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, run a full wash cycle on hottest setting using Cascade automatic dish washing detergent for an ADDITIONAL 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, using Bleach water, wipe down entire interior of washing machine
*Next, using clean white cloth, wipe entire interior of washing machine dry
*Next, leave door ajar to air out machine

*Finally, I have now been informed that I cannot use fabric softener in the machine even though there is a fabric softener dispenser right in the machine because the new front loading machines cannot handle fabric softener!!

Furthermore, I was told that this is new technology and since it is so new, no one really knew these kinds of problems were going to manifest themselves and I just need to try to work with these problems because it is not the manufacturers fault but the GOVERNMENT’S fault! Sorry.

Are you kidding me??

Now I have a $1000.00 piece of junk that the appliance companies are pawning off on unsuspecting consumers and hiding their horrible designs by blaming the government.

So, now this is what I want!

I want the legislature to force manufacturers to properly inform the public of these problems and those who did NOT inform consumers of these issues, COMPENSATE their customers for the $$$$$ it has cost us and the misery and frustration caused by THEIR neglect by NOT informing the consumers of these issues. I want this to be retroactive BACK to at least the year 2005. Furthermore, I want compensated for the cost of buying a top loading washing machine in an effort to keep our families away from the mold and mildew and filthy mess this has caused! Finally, I want manufacturers to own up to the fact that they disregarded the health and safety of consumers in their efforts to profit as much as possible while touting efficiency.

Now I have heard that they have a new 'product' they can sell to us to inhibit the stench of mold and mildew. This is absolutely unacceptable!

This is outrageous and we need to speak out about this and make sure our voices are heard!

SOURCE: two person jacuzzi that hasn;t been used for several years. Iron

You are on the right track. Be sure and chlorinate and run the jets at the same time I would let it set for at least a couple of hours running the jet intermittantly and then drain and repeat.
Sound like you have Iron Bacteria. You may want ot contact a water profeessional who can recommend ways of getting rid of the iron.
Properly Chlorinating your well would be a good first step.

Black stains on door

If it is inside, it is probably mold growing. Front loaders are much more susceptible to mold growth as they seal up tighter, and we all tend to keep the door closed when it is not in use.
Clean the inner door and bellows surfaces with a 50/50 bleach/water solution, applying liberally, and dump the rest into the tub of the washer. Add 1 more cup of bleach to the tub. Fill all of the dispenser cups with bleach. Run the hottest , longest cycle available with the hottest rinse cycle available. For us, it is the "sanitary" cycle. Run a normal cycle immediately thereafter to flush out residual bleach, and leave the door open. The cleaning along with the air drying will keep the mold from growing, and reduce the odors that these machines are famous for. Leave the door open between loads.

How do I get rid of the black stuff in the door seal?

Use a bleach and water solution 50/50 and apply liberally. Place 1 cup of bleach in the washer tub, and fill all of the dispenser cups with bleach. Run the hottest wash-rinse cycle that you have; for us, it is the sanitary cycle. Follow that cycle with a normal cycle to flush out any residual bleach. Leave the door cracked open when the washer is not in use. The moisture that stays in the washer is one of the most common reasons for mold to begin growing in the washer. Allowing it to air dry helps keep it from happening.

I have a Maytag Neptune 1st Generation and the washer door gasket always molds, how to clean and how to prevent molding

The Maytag MAH300AWW was the first generation front load washer. Your MAH5500BWW is a much newer version and has a boot drain and door venting to minimize the mold. Just be sure your drain (bottom center of the boot) is clear. Use a solution of 1/2 cup of Granular Dishwashing Detergant and 1 cup of Chlorine Bleach added directly into the tub. Run the machine through a hot was cycle (with NO clothes inside) every few months and this will reduce or eliminate the mold.

Mold growing on dishes

Recommend that you run another cycle with no DW soap aded, waiting until the dishwasher has filled with hot water and begins to do the first wash cycle. Then add 1/2 cup of bleach to the water and close the door. Allow the cycle to finish. Run it normally with a standard load of dirty dishes. Note: These high efficiency dishwashers count on the "dirt" of the dirty dishes to help wash/clean the dishes. Recommend you not rinse/wash the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

Watch for any occurrence of the black dots and repeat the bleach treatment.

have you tried filling tub with hot water and 2-3 cups CLOROX CHLORINE bleach and letting it wash a few min then letting set for 30-45 min ? bargain bleach tends not to be as strong as the old fashioned stuff also leave lid open as much as possible same applies if front load except wash door boot out inside inner lip.. roll back to clean with bleach solution

Water leak

it sounds like the bleach fill line. at the top of the washer is a bleach fill cup, it might attach to it. this black bleach fill line attaches to the bleach fill cup to the bottom of the tub.
