Hdtv i have and hd box from uverse but cannot get the tv to 1080i format no matter what I change the tv to it stays in 480i format

Your TV will display all High Definition signals as 1080i True HDTV™ and all standard definition signals will be displayed as 480p.

Component Inputs 1-2
YPbPr(480i/480p/1080i)
These inputs can be used for the connection of A/V equipment with component video outputs, such as a DVD player or external HDTV receiver. Please see Appendix B for signal compatibility.
Input DTV (480i/480p/1080i)
This input is used to connect an external DTV receiver, and can be configured for YPrPb and RGB plus H&V signal types.

As a special feature, you have the ability to adjust the red and blue light beams in reference to the fixed green light beam. This process is called convergence. There are two separate memories for convergence. One, for SD 480i/480p signals; the other for HD 1080i signals. SD convergence should be adjusted while watching an SD source and HD convergence should be adjusted while watching an HD source.

Wide Expand: Enlarges the picture, cropping some of the image on both sides. This Expand format is useful to remove or reduce black side bars on HD broadcasts of 4:3 images with black bars. Available for analog 1080i, digital SD 16:9 and digital HD signals.

InputDTV
This input is compatible with most standard DTV and satellite receivers with component video (YPbPr) outputs. Compatible DTV signals are SDTV 480i/480p, and HDTV 1080i. All other DTV signals, such as 720p, need to be converted by the DTV receiver to one of the compatible signal types. Please check the DTV receiver specifications before connecting.
This input is compatible with some DTV receivers using RGB with "separate H and V sync". Compatible DTV signals are SDTV 480i, 480p, and HDTV 1080i. All other DTV signals, such as 720p, need to be converted by the DTV receiver to one of the compatible signal types. Industry standards for DTV RGB signals (systems, synchronization, timing, and signal strengths) are not currently established. These inputs will not be compatible with all DTV receivers that offer RGB, HV outputs. RGB, HV signals with less than 5 cables are not compatible.
If your DTV receiver offers both DTV component video signals and DTV RGB, HV signals, we suggest you use the DTV component video signals. Check the DTV receiver specifications before connecting.

U can't not change mode at will,the 480i or 1080i is determin by the show what mode is play on.1080i only in HD,more HD will need to order from ur cable,dish or telicom compannies.

Check in your instruction manual to see if the set can actually work in 1080i. Most of the sets going back about 4 to 6 years ago were not capable of working in 1080i.
The signal coming to your Sat box may be in 1080i, but your Sat box has to be able to output 1080i. This can be quickly verified by calling the support for your service and giving them the model number of their Sat box.

if the signal is not 1080i the tv will convert back to 480i. check your content.

If you are using the component connection, make sure you are connected to the one that will support 1080i. If that is not the problem, make sure that the HD receiver is outputting 1080i and not 720p. No RPCRT will support 720p and the video may be down-rezed to 480 since this is the case.

You Can Not Change. The TV Recognize the signal on the INPUT.
If the signal is 480i than the tv shows 480i
If the signal is 1080p than the tv shows 1080p (if supported)
If you try with your areal antenna (for now digital broadcast is maximum 1080i (in USA) The TV itself doesnt "upconvert" lower resolution signals.

Problem more than likely with the xbox, as the output stream of data from the game platform is not always consistent...accordianman

If you are using the component inputs it will select 1080i automatically IF that is what it is being sent. Make sure your device (cable/satellite receiver) is set to 1080i. The TV recognizes 480i, 480p(progressive scan DVD player) and 1080i. It DOES NOT recognize 720p. Since it has no HDMI or DVI input it can't do HD DVD or "upconvert" DVD but it does very nicely with 480p/progressive scan.

I also have a Hitachi 53SDX89BA and I bought it with the same assumption as you: that it's HD ready. The specs in the manual states the following: "Full 1080i HDTV Capatable with Set-Top Box". I beleive this means that it does not include an HD tuner, but that it is capable of handling up to 1080i resolution. Normal (non-HD) resolution on this TV is 480i.

So here's my problem: Until recently, I wasn't using the HD settings on this TV because I don't have a set top box, nor do I subscribe to any HD content from my cable provider. However, I just purchased an XBox 360 along with an XBox 360 HD-DVD player (it's an XBox peripheral that works with the game console). The Xbox asks you to choose the resolution output (480i, 720i or 1080i) to match your TV's HD capabilities. When I select 1080i output and change my TV's settings to receive an HD signal, the picture quality is amazing. However, the video signal seems to get lost ocassionally (i.e. TV picture gets scrambled) but then it comes right back. This does not happen when I select a 480i output on the Xbox...but of course, the picture isn't as crisp and clear as a 1080i picture.

I don't know if this is a problem with the TV or with the Xbox. Has anybody else had this problem??

This set does not support 480I in the DTV mode, only 480P and 1080I is supported. Try setting the analog setting in the cable box to 480p and that should take care of watching the set in DTV. Most cable boxes have a setting for format changes in the customer menu, depending on the type of box. If you are able to change the format, then the other inputs will not work since they need a 480I signal, as well as VCRs. Another setup could be to use the S-Video cable or Video input jacks to get a better picture in 480I instead of using the cable input. However, when changing from HD to Analog, you will have to change to the correct input on the set as well. Hope this helps.
