Open Question

Att Hi. My attic fan seems to shut on and off every five seconds or so. I don't recall it doing this in past summers. My husband raised thermostat but it still keeps shutting on and off constantly. It is at least 25 years old or could be even 50 which is age of house. Any suggestions? Thanks.

SOURCE: Combo lite/vent fan/nite light affected by heat?

There's probably a thermal switch in the fixture which turns the fan on when the lights are on for a period of time and heat accumulates in the fixture. It sound like the heat from the attic is setting off the thermal switch. When the attic heat drops, the fixture works correctly.

This is a catch 22 situation, because if the upper housing in the attic is insulated from the attic heat, the insulation will prevent heat dissipation from the heat generated by the fixture's light bulbs. So, for safety reasons, the upper housing should not be insulated.
I'll need to work on this to come up with a fix.

SOURCE: attic fans

I just fixed a Broan-353 with a similar problem - the fan was short-cycling, turning on and off within a minute or less.

These fans have a thermostat which is designed to turn off 10 degrees below where it's set to turn on. Apparently, one failure mode is this temperature delta stops working I've had this happen twice, each time after about 3 years.

Replacement thermostats are available from Broan for about $30 It's a 10 minute repair if you have easy access to the fan.

How do I determine reason that my Danby Dehumidifier isn't cycling on to compressor for more than 3-4 seconds at a time? Fan always runs but compressor only kicks in for 3-4 seconds then back off.

I would say low on gas or bad switch/thermostat.
The compressor probably has a shutoff for low freon. You would need a set of gauges to check for that.
Bad thermostat? You'd need a ohm meter.
User error? What kinda settings or controls do you have on the control panel?

True Freezer T23 compressor will not stop running

Have him check the t'stat. And freon lines. I believe the t'stat is the problem. Are the door gaskets ok and does it seal properly when closed. The fan should always run, so this could be in the rewiring. I am assuming you will be working out of a freezer where the working temp is a little higher.

How do i prevent my lasko heater to keep raising the temperature? i can't seem to set it to stay on one!

If its a central heating unit you should make sure the batteries in the thermostat are good and the fan switch is on auto. then you can open the cover to the heater and tap on the relay. that will usually shut it off if its just sticking. It could be a black box by itself or a box on the circuit board depending on the model

Toshiba laptop shuts down in less than 5 minutes when powering on /cleaned all the dust out and no change

The laptop will need to be dismantled to the motherboard level, remove the fan, heatsink, and blow out dirt and dust with compressed air. Next remove the old thermal paste with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol, including the processor and heatsink. Next apply a thin layer of thermal paste to the processor and heatsink and assemble carefully, and don't forget the fan, plug in to motherboard. Now if it turns out the fan is faulty it must replaced quickly, other wise you risk destroying the processor ic.

Furnace runs 10 seconds and cuts off and will not run again till you adjust the thermostat runs for ten seconds and shuts off again

Don't keep in nutral position (50%) since the cut off and cut on ma be frequently. But your thermostat seems to be faulty as per your statement. Replace it.

Hi all my problem is after 20 minutes the screens goes blue ps3 shuts down seems like overheating

If the fan doesn't change in RPM (listen to the sound of the fan). If the RPM don't change then you probably need to do a system restore. Make sure to back up your system so you Don't loose everything. If it is the fan they are very easy to replace, I can help with that. Let me know.

Hi there! I have a five-year old GE standalone (not in the window) air conditioner model APE09AJM1. Never had a problem in the past, but now I do. The fan works fine. However, the AC is not working...

Hi you have a compressor that is drawing locked rotor amps. It is trying to start for a second, drawing lots of amps, causing the fan to slow down because of this. It is shutting of on its overload protector. Thats why you have no cooling. It may be a run capacitor, but I really doubt that's the problem. You have lost the compressor due to a lock up, burn out, and it would be cheaper to replace this unit.I hate to give you this type of information, but this is the problem, just being honest. Please keep me posted. If you want a second opinion, take it in to a appliance repair shop, and they will tell you the same when its turned on. I wish you the best,
