Dell Dimension 9200 keeps shutting down and won't start up

Hi. My dDell Dimension 9200 keeps shutting down and what's more weird starting up by itself. I had 1 and 2 lights on sometimes, but disconnecting external hard drive seemed to get rid of it. Now pc has shut down, and tryes to restart, but shuts off in a second or two. It feels like it doesn't have enough power. But why does it work sometimes? That has been happening for the last few weeks now. Sometimes it works for a good few hours, but then the same problem occurs. I cannon understand what it is, hardware or software problem. Tryed different settins in bios, formated hard drive, reseated as many things as i could, nothing helps. I don't know where to start with that thing. Any ideas?

Thank you for quick answer. But why would it start sometimes? I thought that if psu is faulty then pc wouldn't start at all. Also, power button ALWAYS flashed (even when new) orange on a start up, not sure about shut down, i'll have a look.

Also, i checked system temp with FanSpeed, and on last uncontrolled shutdown it was max 47 celsius. Another question, why would pc start by itself after i shut it down. Could it be virus? Or it looks like hardware problem?

When i say shuts down i don't sudden cut off, it does exactly the same thing as if i would click it. It says shutting down on the screen.

    Very confusing.

It does feel like something overheats. I didn't realize that PSU can have heating issues.

The key issue on the uncommanded shutdown is the POWER LED. If upon shutdown, the power LED Flashes AMBER, then the power supply is suspect.

If no flashing amber indication, then the next think I check is the heatsink (Processor overheating) remove, clean and apply arctic Silver heat transfer paste, see if the issuje goes away

Last but not least if the system is failing to boot, and displays a 3 4 diag LED code, then you may have a RAM module that is bad or may just need reseating. Running diags off of the Rersoujrce CD is something to look at too

The power supply unit appears to be the culprit from the indications you describe if the TOWER power LED is not a solid green or blue when the system is running.

A power supply can partially fail or can have heat issues and fail after a period of use

I have the dell 9200 desktop and when I start it, it stays on the windowsxp loading screen. What should I do?

Shutdown the computer by holding in the power switch until it shuts down. Then reapply power and hit F8 until it displays - select start-up using last known good configuration.

My Dell Dimension begins to boot then sits there as if asleep

It sounds like it's probably the power supply. Computers require more power to boot up than they do to keep running, so if it's fine once it gets going, the power supply may just be dying. If you have a multimeter and know what you're doing, you can test the power supply connectors to see if any of them (especially the ones leading to the motherboard) are not giving the proper voltages.

How old is the computer?

How to exchange a super noisy vent inside the Dimension 9200 - where exactly is it mounted? (talking about the main/cpu vent - not GPU or powersupply)

The Dimension 9200 is similar to XPS 410. Here is the link to the service manual for the Dim 9200

My Dell Dimension 9200 will not power up reliabily.

what i did was myself i download I8KFanGUI, and turn my fan speed on high, now it has been working without shutting off, plus also I went into the bios and turned "speedstep" on, since i heard windows xp will use it regardless of the bios setting... that may have caused some problems itself causing a switch off. A few times though i could not start the pc, so i opened the case and snapped out the ram (not removing completely, just undoing the insert snaps on 1 side) and start the pc (might've had to unplug and replug a few times to get it to power on)... but i'm guessing i'll rarely have to do that... since i couldnt shut down the pc right 1 time it happened like that. But it is working now!

Dell Dimesion 9200

it could be the corrupted OPERATING SYSTEM
to be sure
turn off the system
when you power it on start tapping F2 key
it will go in syatem setup
leave the system and monitor if it turns off or restarts
if it doesn't get your operating system reinstalled
and if it does restarts of shuts down we have to troubleshoot further
provide me your system's service tag located at the bottom pannel of your system, turn it upside down you will find a bar coded sticker which has a 7 digit alphanumeric number
