If you have had the vehicle hot then I would suspect that you will have a breached head gasket at the very least depending on how hot it was and for how long. You may have damaged other component of the engine as well. Remove the spark plugs and inspect for water on top of the pistons or rotate the engine with the spark plugs removed and watch for water purging from the cylinders. If there is water present then you need to have the head gaskets replaced and the cylinder heads checked by a reputable machine shop for cracks. Other components of the engine should also be checked for damage such as the piston rings.

We had the same problem on our E350. Replaced thermostat, etc. Turned out to be leak in radiator. I would start there.

Heard constant squeel while driving, temp guage went to red . turned off van to let it cool. tried to start, it cranks but wont turn over

sounds like the water pump went bad and most likely if you check the coolant the
engine has overheated due to lack of coolant. This usually results in expensive
engine damage when it occurs. I really hope that it is something else less expensive.

Short in Steering Column?

I am no mechanic, but I cant see a direct correlation between an electrical short and overheating.
I had a bad water pump on my van and never overheated due to the mechanical fan that is on the main shaft that turns the pullies and such.
Sounds, unfortunately, like a freak coincidence. Sorry
