The freezer not working correctly

A couple of days ago the food in the freezer compartment started to slowly defrost, the cooler seems to be working fine. I opened the back compartment of the freezer and saw that solid ice had built up (not extremely though) so with a hair-drier I got rid of all the ice, a day has passed and the freezer is working again as it should but I feel that the problem has not been solved and has only been postponed. I want to know exactly what is the problem so I could fix it if I could; The fan is working fine so I wonder if the problem is with something that I could replace (thermostat, heater or timer) after the repair the first thing I noticed was the sound, I had not realized that sound was gone for the days the freezer wasn't working fine so when the sound (the typical refrigerator sound) came back I knew it was a good thing so, what is/was the problem? (thanks in advance)

The defrost element has faulted, it is relatively easy job, the element is the large metal piece on the bottom of the freezer coil. Disconnect the wires and undo the securing straps fit the new one and secure etc. may also pay to replace the defrost termination sensor. This can be ignored but it will periodically ice up and need defrosting. Last point, sometimes the drain pan gets blocked and the ice buildup begins( you find less ice than a normal defrost fault, you did say not excessive) in this case only the drain needs unblocking and everything will be fine. Can sometimes pay to wait and see if it happens again. Provided you cleared the drip pan drain completely when defrosting.

SOURCE: Kenmore 596.72913200 Refrigerator is Warm, but Freezer is Cold

There should be a push in switch on the door frame that you can push to see if the evaporator fan is functioning. You will be able to hear it when you push in on the switch.

If your problem is defrost related you will see frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer . If it is defrost related it will be ether the timer, heater, or defrost thermostat that is your problem. If it is the timer, locate where the timer is. Sometimes located in the area of the temperature controls with a hole through which you can turn a clutch head screw clockwise very SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. This will start the defrost. if after 30 minutes it defrosts but does not start cooling again turn the screw just a little further and you will hear another click. The compressor should start. If this is you conditions the timer needs to be replaced. If it fails to defrost and restarts to cooling mode after 18-22 minutes the problem is in the defrost heater circuit.

  • the defrost timer on your machine is actually integrated within a control board/air diffuser. hopefully that is not the problem (expensive).
  • i would start by testing the heater and bimetal thermostat in the freezer. (note: the bimetal thermostat will only have continuity when below 40 degrees.)
  • the heat you feel between the doors is normal (if it is not too hot).
  • some of the heat that is released by the machine is intentionally released between the doors to prevent condensation.
  •  if it seems warmer than usual then you might need to clean the coils under the machine and make sure the airflow under the machine is not obstructed at all.
  • if the coils are dirty then they will not be able to release the heat properly and the heat will be released in other areas like between the doors.

SOURCE: Kenmore refrigerator - both sides not working!

Your problem is most of the time dealing wih the defrost thermostat. To diagnose, look for the timer motor. Take a flathead screwdriver and turn it until it clicks. Then find the drain going to the drip pan underneath the refrigerator. If there is no water coming out after 20 minutes, the problem usually lies in the defrost thermostat (about 20 dollars) to replace yourself. Remove the inside panels leading to the evaperator and melt all the ice, cut out the the old defrost thermostat and splice in the new. To test it, put it in a glass of ice water. if after about 5 minutes there is continuity through the wires with an ohm meter, it is good. The problem is in the timer (maybe 50 dollars). As a general rule, the defrost thermostat will go bad first. One more thing that can cause your problem is a clogged drain from the evaperator section of the freezer to the drip pan. This cn cause ice to build up where you can't see it and air won't circulate well. My drain was clogged up with a piece of ice.I melted it with a hair dryer and now it works fine.

Hello,

The most common cause of that is a malfunction of the automatic defrost system. Do you see a bunch of frost on back wall of freezer? if yes it's not defrosting or perhaps the fan in the freezer that circulates air into fresh food compartment has failed,no frost build up if it's the fan, do you hear the fan?

I can smell items in my freezer when I open the door of the fridg

Good day,
All cooling in a refrigerator, be it the freezer section, or the fresh food section is performed by the freezer.
The freezer takes care of itself, but also by the function of the fan motor in the freezer, blows a limited amount of the freezer air into the fresh food compartment to cool it to the nominal 37 degrees.

The odor in the freezer is disguised by the extremely cold air, and is not apparent. But that odor when raised to 35 or 40 degrees will become noticeable.
As well, the freezer compartment rises to 30 degrees plus when going thru it's automatic defrost cycle, which occures for approx. 30 minutes once or twice a day, adding to the problem.
Sealing the packages is probably the only real answer.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Freezer works, Fridge doesn't

The defrost timer inside the fresh food compartment is most likely the problem. Need to turn the timer slowly clockwise until compressor stops. I should remain off for about 25 minutes. During that time the freezer should be in defrost. You may be able to open the freezer door and hear the crackling and sizzle of the defrost taking place. If the timer does not restart the refrigerator after 25 minutes the turn the timer clockwise again until the compressor restarts. Number 6 in photo below is the defrost timer. The replacement timer part number is 482493. Here is a photo. Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer defrosted and the motor won't start back up.

From what I can gather, you have a self defrosting freezer and the "motor" you speak of is the fan inside the freezer. If this is correct, do this:
Unplug freezer. Unload all food into coolers or other freezer space. Leave freezer door open for a day to allow it to manually defrost. Plug freezer back in after minimum 24 hours and confirm fan running and cooling before loading back up with food.

Ge eterna series fridge side not working

Could you look inside the freezer compartment and after unplugged remove the panel to see if ice is blocking the vent to fresh food compartment. If there is ice it could be something is not working with the defrost cycle. Your refrigerator has a control board that handles these processes but other factors can cause ice buildup in vent. Thanks, Sea Breeze

GE TPX24BPBGBB fresh food section won't cool

Have you noticed any ice built up on the rear freezer wall? it is very likely that you have a defrost problem situation,IE: Heater,Defrost Thermostat,Defrost Timer any failure in these components will cause an icing problem and therefore you will not get sufficient air flow to the Food Compartment
