Where do I put the freon into

You didn't say what year but here is what you are looking for.
The Low Pressure Service Port has a Larger diameter than the High Pressure port. The High Pressure port will cause the freon can to explode if you connect to it.

My sony rear projection tv's red light started blinking 8 times, so I removed the high vltage splitter, so I needed to test the block. And you guys are sugesting for me to turn on the tv, now do I

Turn on very briefly and make sure the large red wire that entered the block is well away from any metal---if hear a frying sound and blink sequence is gone the block is bad( I used to put the wire into a old soda bottle as it has over 20 thousand volts coming out of it, much like the spark plug wires in a car---high voltage with low current.

TV turned on, heard loud pop. Now screen is very dark.

It sounds like the actual tube / lamp inside the unit has exploded. You will need to either get it repaired at a local TV repair shop or replace the TV. Unfortunately with that unit it is probably cheaper to just replace it.

Kenmore spacemaster will turn on, display appears to work, but food will not cook. Unit makes low whirring noise dissimilar to the standard noise. John

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for high voltage section test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

You can find handy exploded views at the Sears Parts Site.

BUT once you have the part number from the Sears site, you can often get the parts cheaper
here.

look for trouble in the low voltage and or high voltage power supply circuits. the popping sound could be an exploded safety capacitor in the horizontal output to the flyback transformer. the horizontal output transistor maybe damaged. chances are the low voltage regulator is also damaged.

When turn on no picture and there is a high pitch buzz or frying. Then after a minute or two it will shut off by itself. Before thid happened the picture would come on slowly with a frying sound and then...

my first instinct in this is flyback transformer. or if it is three tube projector could be a high voltage splitter lines in picture sound like what is called retrace lines ... this is another indication of a possible bad flyback. high pitch sound is another sypmpton of a high voltage flyback transformer problem. WARNING televisions generate potental lethal charge. the device called flyback is used to generate several THOSAND volts. so be carefull if you take the back of any television. along with the flyback the horizontal output transistor possible could have failed. What type of tv is it? model

TV won't come on

If still under warranty or if you have no electronic repair experience you should take the set back to the shop or to a repair person. Some of the solutions described below can be dangerous, TV's are very hazardous to service. Even when plugged out, TV's can store very high voltages. This is probably a startup problem. It may be as simple as an open resistor that provides initial drive to the horizontal deflection. Check for power to the horizontal output transistor. If there is, check for drive. Could also be a bad flyback transformer. Another problem might be that the set is in high voltage shutdown, possibly due to a faulty voltage regulator. Check the regulated voltage going to the flyback primary (it should be marked on the circuit board what that voltage should be... 120V-140V in most TV's). If it is too low, the flyback transformer or one of its secondaries is probably loading down the primary input. If the voltage is too low, try disconnecting the secondaries. If the voltage remains too low, try disconnecting the primaries too. If the voltage is then normal, the flyback is bad. A REALLY bad flyback will also blow a fuse. don't leave the TV on too long with a shorted flyback, the h. output transistor can get too hot and probably fry, if it isn't fried already. If the primary voltage is too high, then the set is probably in high voltage shutdown, possibly caused by the voltage regulator. Good luck, and stay away from it if you haven't done this before. Take it to a lab if it's worth the repair.
