Try the following;

* Reboot PC from Last Known Good Configuration.

To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps: Start your computer. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

OR

* Do a System Restore

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point and restore your computer.

OR

Update the Graphics Driver.

Please restart your computer and keep tapping F8 key, you should see a screen which while give you options to choose like normal mode, safe mode etc. In that screen please use your up and down arrow key to choose last known good configuration and hit enter.

This should take your computer back to the previous settings when your computer is working fine.

Note: if you have allready tried to go to safe and were able to go to safe mode then do not choose this method.

If you can go to safe mode use system restore (steps vary from windows version to version). Restore you computer's settings to a previous setting (Steps for XP - Start - Programs (or all programs) accessores - system tools and click on system restore and follow the onscreen instructions to restore your computer settings to a day or 2 previous to installig the new software.

Note: this system restore does not destroy your data (your pictures and files) but you will loose the new softwares installed between today and the day you choose.

Windows xp on my hp pavilion laptop starts up and freezes at the windows is starting up screen. Will not do anything after that...just sits there! Help....without having tech fees and charges!!

Try tapping F8 as soon as the computer powers on.
Try Last Known Good Configuration.
If that doesn't help, try safemode.
While loading to safe mode, it will ask whether u want to try system restore.
Start system restore and restore the computer to a previous date when it was working fine.
If that also doesn't work, the only option is to reinstall Windows.

Hi I would suggest you to check the performance information and tools in the control panel and adjust the power settings accordingly, usually you have power saver and normal options, try changing it and hope this resolves the issue. Apart from this option since this is Vista, there is a way in which you can restore the machine to the date in which it worked appropriately Try typing system restore in the search and try restoring the OS back to the date in which it would have worked without any issue Even after doing all these changes, as you have already mentioned, its the VISTA mystique. wonder why MS developed this at first place :) try changing the OS back to the solid and XP Good luck :)

This could be caused by a corrupted operating system, a virus or a faulty memory card. You may first try to restore your computer to a date when you think it last allowed you to download something. See if it works.

To run system restore, go to start>all programs>accessories>system restore.

Usb ports not working

hi,

What device are you trying to connect? was there an error message when you plug in the usb device. try booting up your computer to safe mode with networking.

1. Restart the computer
2. Keep on tapping F8 when you have the HP logo screen, using the down/up arrow of the keyboard choose safe mode with networking. if the device still not working then it could be a problem with the USB driver. You may try restoring your computer back to the working time using system restore. Just go to start then Accessories - System tools- system restore.Restore your computer to a working date.

Keep me posted.

Thanks.

Monitor keeps blanking out. won't read or burn dvds. goes into 'preparing to standby' and freezes have to manually turn computer off. running very slow.

Possibly a video card problem or severe virus. First download free Avast anti virus software and run preboot scan upon installation. If this does not fix the problem try doing a system restore to a time before this problem occurred. Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore
