There is usually a retensioning screwdriver slot at the center of the back., you have to take off a small cap at back.

SOURCE: Hozelock Auto Reel

I took it apart by unscrewing the 2 halves of the plastic cover making sure the hose was fully wound up as the spring mechanism can be dangerous. Extreme care must be taken. I can now get lubrication on to the spring. The manufacturers will not tell you how to do this due to health and safety rules.

My hozelock auto reel is only retracting 90 percent of the way in, how do i fix this?

This sort of problem affects all sorts of retractable things as they age - tape measures, vacuum cleaner cords, car seat belts...

Mostly such things contain a very long flat steel spring that is coiled inside and pulling out the hose, tape measure, etc. coils the spring more tightly storing energy to rewind when needed. Unfortunately few such designs use a spring that is strong enough to overcome the additional friction that accumulates with age and use. Lubricant applied when new loses effectiveness, smooth surfaces become less smooth and use produces dust that has a further negative effect and things like cables and hoses lose flexibility and smoothness meaning they need more power to rewind effectively.

Over the years I have variously taken such items apart to clean, lubricate and retension the spring. Sometimes I have drilled a small hole in the casing to the spring chamber and sprayed a lot of WD-40 in there while working the mechanism. With seatbelts and cables I find a dry silicone spray to make the belt or cable and it's guides slippery works well without disturbing the spring.

My final advice is if you remove the cover of the spring chamber always keep at least one hand on the spring. Do not put it down and do not let it go or you could believe for a second you are being attacked by an angry cat and rewinding those springs by hand is hard and tedious work...

My hozelock auto reel has stopped locking. Have tried pulling it all the way out and then releasing but it does not solve the problem.

40 meter Hozelock auto reel would not lock when winding back into the drum.
1, Make sure the Hozelock hose has fully retracted into the drum.there should be no tension on the hose reel spring.
2, Use a Black & Decker Workmate.
3, Carefully opened the side cover taking out all of the Torx screws (10 in total) remove handle.
4, Turned the reel over and placed the auto reel onto the Black & Decker Workmate.
5, Placed a socket into the Workmate vice then line up the centre shaft bolt on the auto reel onto the socket, this will hold the steel spring in place so that I could undo the 2 security Torx screws. Slowly remove the 2 screws- there will be a little spring tension when removing the 2 screws, take care.
6, Lever up the centre shaft up out of the reel to expose the internal hose reel, take note the rotation of the plastic cog inside the cover.
7, Remove the brake locking arm from the side cover.
the arm had broken in half, I used a soldering iron to weld the two halves of the brake lever back together.
8, Rebuild in reverse order.
8, When rebuilding the auto reel use the ratchet and socket to tension the steel spring, I unwound the hose out of the drum then slowly wound the spring using the ratchet and socket. This wound in the hose onto the drum up to the hose stop then a couple more turns on the ratchet for a little more tension.
9, Whilst holding the ratchet keeping the tension on the spring. Replace the 2 security screws on the centre shaft .
10, This link on Youtube I found very helpful (46 sec into video) you can see the internal working and the brake lever.

Bought a Hoselock Hose Reel today and cant figure

You need to purchase a Hoselock tap connector. There are two basic types, one has a thread that screws on to a theaded tap and the other type is a compession fitting that can be secured to most other taps.

The full range of connectors can be found on their website
