Question about Dell Latitude D531 Laptop Computer PC Notebook

1 Answer

I'm having problems installing Ubuntu on Windows 8.

I have a Gateway NV52L15u that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. It is in UEFI mode so i can't boot in Legacy mode and my USB wont boot in UEFI mode. The BIOS only lets me change between legacy mode and UEFI mode, but it wont let me change the "secure boot" option, though it is there, but its gray. What do?

SOURCE: Dell Vostro will not boot up

During startup, just before the Windows splash screen appears, you should be able to hit the F8 key for a list of startup options. It looks from your post as if you know how to do this.

One of those choices should be to disable automatic restart on system failure. (or words very similar to that.) Use this choice to get into safe mode if you can, or into regualar windows.

Once there, go to the system restore feature and restore to a date when everything worked.

This error message is a message pointing to a piece of software (as opposed to hardware, as so many of these messages are).

The next best fix is to reinstall the OS from the ground up. this may be a major hassle, depending on the data you have on that hard drive.

Good luck

SOURCE: cant install xp to dell c400 with external cd-rom

This is how I did it, you may or may not have the ability. A basic knowledge of Dos is necessary 1) I used another laptop but you could use an adapter to use the hard drive in a regular computer. 2)boot with a windows 98 boot disk, fdisk it to a fat32 partition, make the hard drive a system boot disk (format /s c:) 3) copy the i386 folder and all its contents from a full or full oem (not branded) disk to the laptop drive, also copy smartdrv and highmem.sys from the floppy (speeds thing up dramatically) and create a config.sys file with device=highmem.sys 4)physically install the hard drive back into the C400, boot to dos run smartdrv.exe, then go to the i386 folder and type winnt.exe (enter) wooo should work. SOURCE: Hello,

Hi there,

This means that your HDD is corrupted. This could have happened if your computer was dropped and sometimes it happens even when nothing has happened to it. If you take your computer to a repairman, he will be able to fix the HDD for you. Do not attempt to open the HDD yourself as the smallest piece of dust will ruin the HDD. The repairman will open it in a 100% dust proof room.

What might have happened is that the arm in your HDD has fallen on to the magnetic part of the HDD itself. Most of the data should be able to be recovered. If your laptop is only 8 months old, it should still be under warranty so i recommend that you take it to your suppler and they should fix it for free.

Thank you for using FixYa! Have a nice day and please remember to rate this solution.

Warm regards,

Windows 8.1 x64 dvd won't boot on UEFI pre-installed Ubuntu laptop

not sure on this one Ubuntu likes to be installed last after windows is set up. I would think that you would have to blow away the ubuntu partitions by resizing the partitions to one partion. But you would want to be extremely careful not to touch the hidden recovery partition. You could use a program called gparted to see what the partions are and resize the partion. Extreme caution is needed as if you get it wrong you will not be able to undo it. The problem you are experiencing is because the boot loader is ubuntu grub. You will need another computer to download a gparted iso file and then use infrarecorder to make a boot cd. it can be found at http://gparted.org/ see http://www.ehow.com/how_6540931_remove-ubuntu.html

My new Hp p2-1394 desktop came with Windows 8. I do not like 8, and wish to install Windows 7. I can boot from CD but can not access my hard drive to install Windows 7.

all original windows reserve a recovery drive. you should repartition your hard disk first and delete the recovery drive to be able to install another OS.

My screen keeps flashing" diagnosing your PC" why

There is a problem with your windows 8 PC's installation, which has stopped it from booting correctly; hence why it starts in 'startup repair', and tries to diagnose your PC. Hold the F8 key while booting your computer to go into the startup menu for Windows; click Advanced startup options; and select Restore my PC; which will reinstall windows.
This may or may not work for your machine, you may have to hold F2, F10, or the Escape key to go into the UEFI setup and go into startup options from there.

  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Change PC Settings.
  4. In PC Settings, select General.

No pre-installed software

Hi mdedrick31

The limited information that you have given is very difficult to diagnose a problem with, if you are looking for a solution the more information you supply will give a better opportunity for a diagnosis or possibly a solution to your problem so if you give us more information we can try to give you a better informed solution.

However if your machine does not have any pre-installed software you will have to purchase a operating system for starters. If it has an operating system ie. Microsoft XP or Linux or Windows seven but no applications then you will have to purchase and install these.

If you do not have an operating system I suggest you try asking a friend to download ubuntu and try that it is free

Is this computer supporting USb functionality in installation mode? Have you tried using a PS2 Mouse and Keyboard to try and solve the issue? Some computers do not have the ability to run USB devices pre-windows so try to use a PS2 device and see if it works.
