Forgotten CMOS password

I bought this computer from a rent-to-own company and someone put a CMOS password on it. I called them and no one seems to know it. I know on the old 486s it was just a matter of pulling the jumper on J14 but I can't find it on this motherboard (P4VMM2). Can you help me clear this password?

    Going to try the battery later and let it sit over night. Already downloaded the manual and it also suggests pulling the battery to clear the CMOS. Will let you know tomorrow how it goes. Thanks

  • Kim Goebel Aug 27, 2007

    Well 6 hours later (after shutting the system down and removing the battery), the password is still there. So now I'll try removing the jumper from JBAT1 and see if that works.

    Informatica

    The picture you have provided is of P4VMM2 v5.0A motherboard. Unfortunately mine is a P4VMM@ v7.1. The schematics is different. The IDEs on my motherboard are side by side and run parallel to the RAM. The battery is in the corner where the IDEs are in the picture you provided. Now there is a jumper right beside the battery. Would that be JBAT1? I can't read it myself. Lettering is way to small. Let me know.

    Thank you guys! Informatica it worked!!! Better than what ECS wanted me to do which was flash the BIOS (something I'm always leery of doing).

    Thanks again you guys!

    Version 7.3 was the closest I could find.
    From the manual:

    JBAT1: Clear CMOS Jumper
    This jumper is to clear the contents of CMOS memory. You may need to clear the CMOS memory if the settings in the Setup Utility are incorrect that pre-vents your mainboard from operating. To clear the CMOS memory, disconnect all the power cables from the mainboard and then move the jumper cap into the CLEAR setting for a few seconds.

    On JBAT1 the clear position is across pins 2-3.

    You can download the manual from the link below:

- you can try removing the cmos battery - download the motherboard manual from the manufacturer? to find the jumper layout - possibly the jumper is just 2 solder pads and not the actual jumper pins. you can short them momentarily together to get the same result as removing a jumper. - sometimes the inside of the pc case or cover has a schematic sticker attached to give the motherboard layout.

I have a windows insignia 8". I've already forgotten my password and I NEED it for school, how can I hard reset it??

You can't "reset" a laptop. You can REISTALL windows but you'll lose all your data and installed aplications.
Now, be specific: WHICH passwoed did your forger:
- The BIOS password, one that appears as soon as you turn on your computer, before Windows starts up
- The password to some Solid Stae Drive
or
- the password to start Wndows

If you forgot your SSD password, your are done. No way to retrive that password.. Gues manufacturer has a "bacdoor" way to reinitialize them so you should go to store where you bought your computer
Bios password can be reset if you do a factory reset to BIOS, removing cmos battery and wait some time till cmos discharges.
If you haven't dont this before, don't do it. Call someone who has experience, you may end with more problems then you have currently

To resete Windows password, depends on your Window version. Some returen from google search; you can specify better and get a better return

Problem: You do not have access to change the settings in BIOS? . Have bought a...

There are two passwords in BIOS. One is start up password, the other isBIOS setting password. If you have forgotten the start up password thatmeans you cannot open computer at all. Then the first method is theonly thing you can do. Other methods can use to clear setting password.
==①:Motherboard Battery Discharge==
The common way toreset start up password is discharge Motherboard Battery. Most of thecurrent motherboard BIOS is using the button batteries to provideelectric power.That means if there is no electricity, the informationit contains will be lost. When it’s on power again, BIOS will set backto its original state, of course, there will be no BIOS passwords. Butyou will lose your setting at the same time.
What we need to dois to power off computer, open the computer box, and then unplug thepower plug of the computer to make sure that it is no electricity atall. Then locate the white silver button battery on the motherboard.Remove the battery carefully. Perhaps 30 seconds later, put back thebattery.
After put back the computer box then power on, thesystem will prompt “CMOS Checksum Error-Defaults Loaded”. That meansCMOS errors detected during inspections, had been included in thesystem default, BIOS password cracking success!
On somemotherboards, the battery is soldered to the motherboard, making itdifficult to remove. If this is the case, you have another alternative.Somewhere on the motherboard you should find a jumper that will clearthe BIOS password. If you have the motherboard documentation, you willknow where that jumper is. If not, the jumper may be labeled on themotherboard. If you are not fortunate enough for either of these to bethe case, you may be able to guess which jumper is the correct jumper.This jumper is usually standing alone near the battery. If you cannotlocate this jumper, you might short both of the points where thebattery connects to the motherboard.
==② : Backdoor BIOS Password==
Eachmotherboard manufacturer has set a backdoor password in order tofacilitate the provision of technical support. The backdoor password isa BIOS password that works, no matter what the user sets the BIOSpassword to. These passwords are typically used for testing andmaintenance. Manufacturers typically change the backdoor BIOS passwordsfrom time to time.

==③: Software Crack==

Can't log in

If yous has a BIOS password (password = _) when you turn the laptop on, then the only fix is to buy a parallel port password removal key (they go for as low as $10 on eBay), or you can make your own (schematics are available for free on the Internet), then plug the key into the laptop's parallel port, turn it on, and the CMOS password will be removed. There is no shorting of pins or removal of CMOS battery for this model.

Not accepting password. Unable to change or alter any password.

It is a small 25 cent sized battery that help the cmos hold its memory. You will find it on the mother board, the big main circuit board in the computer.

The only way to reset the BIOS password is to find the jumper pins on the motherboard and set them to the clear state and remove the CMOS battery. It resets the CMOS to the default state.
