just that: they don't always work. or rather, they'll work for some kit,
but other serial devices really don't like them: try before you buy!

I use a fair few or serial devices for work and upon trying to buy a new
laptop found that hardly any of those now have serial ports on them. I was
told "ah get this USB-Serial adaptor - works fine". Bollocks
I've had the laptop for 6 months and for every 30 minutes of productive use
from the thing i spend 3 hours in frustration trying to get it to work
again. I've now decided to sell the laptop (new thinkpad) and get a slightly
older thinkpad with serial port and use that instead.
They *do* work. However, its possibly the worst problem to solve of all,
when the reason it stops working is due to no changes of configuration and
there are so few options to change in order to get it to work. I've been
working in IT support for 10 years and I know when its time to cut my losses
and go for the 'backup plan'.
I don't need a P4 laptop anyway. P3 will do.
cheers

What: an adaptor so you can use something like a standard serial modem
on a USB port? If so, I used one for a while on an old book PC I had
which didn't have a serial port (but did have USB).
It worked fine on Windows 98SE.
Just plugged it into the usb port and the modem, then switched on.
Windows detected it and loaded the drivers off the CD-ROM. As simple
as that.
Mark.
