Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

Hi i have a kenmore model # 106.55526400 side by side refrigerator with major temperature problems. First the freezer stopped freezing , all food melted and then of corse the refrigerator side stopped working. Inside of both is cool but no where close to keeping food from spoiling. I first checked both fans and the are both running properly , then I unplugged it and let it sit over night to make sure the coils were not frozen. When I plugged back in still not cool or freezing! I now have taken off the back panel of the freezer to see if I could detect any problems with the coils , heater , fan , etc. from looking everything looks like its working. I don't think the coils where frozen due to the fact that after I unplugged it there was very little water in the drip tray. What should I try next? From what I have read I believe I need to check one of the parts with an OME meter but not exactly sure what pat to check . Any help would be greatly appreciated!

SOURCE: Refrigerator not cooling

We had a similar problem - it was the compressor start device. Ordered a new one from repairclinic.com, and it works great now. The old start device rattled when we shook it. We opened it up and found lots of burnt little bits. Check to see if your compressor kicks on & off a lot. Ours would run only about 10-15 seconds, then go off for a minute or two - then back on for a few seconds. If that is happening, it could be the start device. Hope this helps.

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.

First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

Clean condenser coils, remove anything around refrigerator that might prevent air flow on coils. Make sure freezer and fresh food area door are completely closed.

My Kenmore side by side freezer stopped working for a day, all the frozen foods defrosted, then it started working again the next day. I have an appt. for Sears to come, but should I cancel?

The fact it stopped freezing to the point that your food thawed is a definite problem you need to have inspected. But keep in my mind, you apparently have an intermittent issue, and if you give your refrigerator repair service technician as many details about what you noticed in regards to your temperatures as you can, he should be able to pinpoint your problem if he knows what he is doing.

Model 106.54512300 freezer is not freezing food,

Check the obvious, the coils underneath need to be cleaned, and the fan needs to be running. And check to see if there is a heavy frost on the back wall inside the freezer. If there is it could indicate a defrosting problem. Both will cause the temperature to rise. Also, be sure the fan in the freezer is running.

I also have the same refrigerator model 106.56566400 and periodically when the power goes off in the house the refrigerator & freezer will stop cooling. Try pushing the on/off button located inside the refrigerator to the left of the digital temperature controls. Hold the button down, this turns the unit off, then press it again to turn it back on. This basically resets the refrigerator, and most of the time works to get the refrigerator cooling again. Try this first before calling a repair man.
