This could very well be and most commonly be a bad power board. The power board is where the power cord attaches to the power board or a power inverer to the power board. Then the power board has capacitors and resistors on it that limit and distribute the power evenly through the system. The caps can go bad, leak, burn out, swell up, ect. The same with the resistors.

It sounds that there is some shorted component/s one either main power regulator board, or at the main digital board. Your TV need a through checkup.
