If its the compressor, the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced, typically when they do that, they will short out, and trip the breaker.
It could be the condenser fan motor going bad too, knocking/pinging noise seems more suspect to a fan motor going out or a bent fan blade.

Recommend a appliance repairman to look at this

SOURCE: Kenmore Refrigerator making loud noise

Does the sound occur when the compressor is starting or shutting down? and only lasts for a couple of seconds? I had one do the exact same thing. Sometimes it would also wake me up at night. If so, I'm afraid he is right. On the bright side, it worked fine for years. I gave it to a girlfriend when I purchased a bigger one and it is still working today. The only thing you can do is change the compressor, which is probably not $$ practical.

SOURCE: Loud buzzing noise from inside Jenn Air 2389G fridge

i don't know jennair specifically being from england.
however, there is often a fan inside the back panel and the noise you heard was the fan hitting ice. the reason now not heard and fridge not working may be that the ice has built up so much the fan is jammed

SOURCE: refrigerator knocking noise

the motor could be on the way out. Put your hand (carefully) on the motor (back of the refridgerator), if it is too hot to touch then the motor is burning out and will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: funny fridge noise, kenmore elite trio

I have a Kenmore Elite Trio and the freezer was making a frog sound. I found the solution.

My model number is 596.75523400. The sound will stop when the freezer is opened. It will stop again when the freezer drawer is open and the light switch is pressed to turn off the light. The ice drawer was full but it had stopped making ice.

Here is the fix in less than 10 minutes using only a screwdriver.

  • Take out the two freezer baskets
  • Remove the freezer door from the two slide tracks.
  • Unplug the icemaker electric connection at the back wall. Depress the clips on the side of the plug and wiggle it loose.
  • There are 3 screws that attach the icemaker to the left freezer wall. Remove the lower screw and unscrew the top two about ½ way out.
  • Slide the icemaker up so the slots slip over the 2 screws.
  • Put the icemaker in the sink and run a bit of water on the frozen cubes until they fall out.
  • Take the screwdriver and check the water inlet hose/pipe for ice that obstructs the flow of water into the ice maker.
  • Re-mount using the 3 screws and plug in the electric connector. Make certain the water inlet tube is positioned thru the retaining hole before you remount the screws.
  • Replace freezer door and baskets.

Kenmore elite french door refrigerator and freezer not cooling

Check the compressor start device. The fans will be running and the compressor fan will be running but the compressor is problaly not running. If it is then it could be the compressor itself that is not oumping.

How do I stop the loud knocking noises coming from my refridgerator?

Pull the fridge away from the wall and inspect the compressor. Your description sounds like the compressor is hitting something. It is rubber mounted and usually can be pushed away from whatever it is hitting. You do not want to jamb something to stop the noise, as the compressor needs to move freely. Many compressors shake during start up and shutdown, and this is considered normal. Abnormal if the compressor hits something during this movement.

KitchenAId refrigerator is making a knocking sound.

When there is a noise it is important to know the source of the noise. In the case of a fridge the fault is usually a poor compressor motor assmebly mounting. Over a time the bushes and the mountings can wear out and result in noise when the compressor vibrates. Also when the motor runs , in many cases it can produce a sympathetic vibration as the grills, the rear fitting or plastic can make noise. finally a fault within the compressor can be related to this specially if you can place a hearing probe to know the emission of noise.

My refrigeratro makes a knocking noise and it is getting more frequent and louder. What causes this?

The knocking noise will be from the compressor in the back of the fridge. It is a (typically) black object a little smaller than a soccer ball, situated at the bottom of the unit in the rear). It will have pipes connecting it to the hear exchanger (a black radiator that covers most of the rear of the fridge). The knocking will happen when the fridge is in a cooling cycle and the compressor is running.

There are 2 reasons for the compressor to "knock":

1) It is positioned on rubber mounts and one of these may have become dislodged if the fridge was moved recently. Or one or more of the mounts may be worn, or the compressor may have been slightly moved by something and is knocking on another component or the chassis of the fridge. It may be simple enough to check this out and move the compressor on its mountings slightly to aviod the knocking.

2) Far worse, the knocking may be from an internal component in the compressor. Sadly, this is a sealed unit and while it is possible for a professional to replace the compressor and then re-gas the fridge (Re-fill the coolant gas that will escape when the compressor is removed), the cost of doinf this will probably mean that the fridge is beyond economical repair.

My 2003 kenmore elite french door fridge made noise for several days, then died. Repairman said it was compressor...expensive repair, so I bought new fridge. Old fridge came back to life 48 hours after...

I bet the bearings in your compressor are bad. The compressor will run and heat up but after getting hot it won't always restart. Most of the time it happens with Tecumseh compressors.

Amana refridgerator mdl abl2222fes knock noise

sounds like the compressor vibration dampers are wearing out. the dampers are the rubber washers that seperate the compressor from the chassis of the fridge. when they start to deteriorate, and the compressor kicks on, it will bounce against something in the chassis, causing a knocking noise.

Knocking noise coming from Whirlpool Gold refrigerator

I also have a new Whirlpool Gold fridge (bottom freezer with French doors) and it was making a knocking sound. The knocking sound would start when the fridge kicks in and starts running to cool, and would last for about a minute or less and be a slow knock.
I called Whirpool customer service since it is new and on warranty. They sent out a technician and he said the knocking is from gas/air built up in the copper tubing for the freezer because the copper tubing is too cold, and when the fridge first turns on it forces the air through, making the knocking sound.
His "fix" was to adjust the copper tubing so that it is closer to the heat of the motor/compressor and heat of another copper line so that the cooler line stays warm so the air/gas doesn't build up. His fix worked slightly, but the fridge is still knocking, just not as bad and not as long - it knocks fast for about 5 to 10 seconds instead of a minute.
Going to call customer service again soon and see where to go from here.
